Cucurbitacins from the Leaves of Citrullus colocynthis (L.) Schrad

Abstract: Abstract:Two new tetracyclic cucurbitane-type triterpene glycosides were isolated from an ethyl acetate extract of Citrullus colocynthis leaves together with four known cucurbitacins. Their structures were established on the basis of their spectroscopic data (mainly NMR and mass spectrometry). Evaluation of the in vitro cytotoxic activity of the isolated compounds against two human colon cancer cell lines (HT29 and Caco-2) and one normal rat intestine epithelial cell line (IEC6), revealed that one of the isola… Show more

“…A detailed phytochemical characterization of the leaves, stems, and roots of C. colocynthis revealed the presence of different classes of metabolites—such as coumarins, hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives, flavan-3-ols glycosides, flavone glycosides, and tetracyclic triterpenes (Table 1)—as according to previous investigations [42,43,44]. These compounds, which have been indicated as responsible for antifungal activity against Aspergillus strains [38], were abundant in the analyzed extracts (Table 1).…”

“…These results were quite close and within the range of the values specified by the suppliers [37,38]. [40][41][42][43][44][45]. The HPLC method was used to quantitatively determine the amount of Cu D and Cu I isolated from the fruit juice.…”

“…Studies have shown that cucurbitacins causes marked changes in the actin cytoskeleton. Cucurbitacin is a class of tetracyclic triterpenoids extracted from the cucurbitaceae that have a wide range of pharmacological effects, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and liver protective effects ( Chen et al, 2012 ; Recio et al, 2012 ; Cai et al, 2015 ; Chawech et al, 2015 ). Among the numerous known family members of cucurbitacin, CuE is one of the more important members.…”
