PurposeThis paper aims to establish a theoretic framework to provide a fundamental understanding of cyberspatial objects, their existence and their identification scheme while providing a connection between cyber-enabled spaces and cyberspace. It develops an avenue to quantify general philosophical and theoretical questions, precisely, inherently spatial basis that produces an unprecedented space–time continuum, in which cyber-enabled relations evolve.Design/methodology/approachMultidisciplinary theoretical approaches are needed to describe complex systems, which in this paper are integrated in a quest for the principles underlying the structural organization and dynamics of cyberspace. A theoretic framework is presented, and the spatial conception of cyber-enabled physical, social, information and thinking spaces and entities existence are provided.FindingsWith spatial objects and spatial properties, cyberspace is inherently spatial. Its basic constructs are founded on its spatial qualities and producing radical space–time compression, cyber-enabled spaces in which dynamic relations develop and thrive. The cyberspatial object operations are primarily built on foundations that depend on physical space and other spatial metaphors. Information space, basically missing in the literature, is an important part of cyberspace.Research limitations/implicationsThis work suggested a novel analytical approach to describing cyberspace from broader perspectives and fields. Due to the novelty and divergence of cyber concepts, an interdisciplinary study and methodology are needed. Thus, more research toward theoretical direction could help many of the practical implementations of concepts.Practical implicationsThe research is of particular significance in cyberspatial mechanics to describe the dynamics and behavior of cyber physical systems. For example, object-based analysis functions like spatial query, node pattern analysis, cluster analysis, spatial similarity analysis and location modeling.Originality/valueComplementing the existing literature and defining information space to the research sphere, a theoretical framework providing a fundamental understanding of cyberspatial objects and the general cyberspace foundation has been proposed, resulting in a formalized concept of existence, interactions and applications and services, with respect to philosophy, science and technology, respectively.

The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically highlighted the importance of developing simulation systems for quickly characterizing and providing spatio-temporal forecasts of infection spread dynamics that take specific accounts of the population and spatial heterogeneities that govern pathogen transmission in real-world communities. Developing such computational systems must also overcome the cold start problem related to the inevitable scarce early data and extant knowledge regarding a novel pathogen’s transmissibility and virulence, while addressing changing population behavior and policy options as a pandemic evolves. Here, we describe how we have coupled advances in the construction of digital or virtual models of real-world cities with an agile, modular, agent-based model of viral transmission and data from navigation and social media interactions, to overcome these challenges in order to provide a new simulation tool, CitySEIRCast, that can model viral spread at the sub-national level. Our data pipelines and workflows are designed purposefully to be flexible and scalable so that we can implement the system on hybrid cloud/cluster systems and be agile enough to address different population settings and indeed, diseases. Our simulation results demonstrate that CitySEIRCast can provide the timely high resolution spatio-temporal epidemic predictions required for supporting situational awareness of the state of a pandemic as well as for facilitating assessments of vulnerable sub-populations and locations and evaluations of the impacts of implemented interventions, inclusive of the effects of population behavioral response to fluctuations in case incidence. This work arose in response to requests from county agencies to support their work on COVID-19 monitoring, risk assessment, and planning, and using the described workflows, we were able to provide uninterrupted bi-weekly simulations to guide their efforts for over a year from late 2021 to 2023. We discuss future work that can significantly improve the scalability and real-time application of this digital city-based epidemic modelling system, such that validated predictions and forecasts of the paths that may followed by a contagion both over time and space can be used to anticipate the spread dynamics, risky groups and regions, and options for responding effectively to a complex epidemic.INDEX TERMSAgent-based Modeling, city-scale digital twins, disease transmission, epidemiology, geospatial modeling, healthcare interventions, lockdowns, microsimulation, model validation, synthetic populations, risk groups, vaccinations, visual analytics.

PurposeThe COVID-19 has affected the whole world and forced countries to impose lockdowns and restrict travel and transportation. This was followed by different countries formulating different policies, and when transportation resumed, there were some restrictions. Such strategies forced transporters to rethink mode choice decision making for freight transportation. The purpose of this study is to identify and rank the factors affecting freight transport mode choice decisions considering the spread of COVID-19 outbreak.Design/methodology/approachInitially, the factors affecting the mode choice decisions for freight transportation amid the COVID-19 outbreak have been extracted from a literature survey and group discussion with experts. Further, this paper employs the integration of grey-Decision making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) with fuzzy Best Worst Method to analyze the identified factors and their sub-factors. The model's robustness and feasibility were then tested using sensitivity analysis.FindingsThe findings of the study showed that Disaster Characteristics and Operations Factors are the most and least influential factors, respectively. Panic, Travel restrictions, Border restrictions, Severity, and Mortality rate are the top five ranked sub-factors. Panic, Compliance to Social distancing, and Passenger and Freight integration are among the new sub-factors proposed. In the current circumstances, these sub-factors are crucial and relevant. In addition, various recommendations are offered to improve transportation services while guaranteeing safety, such as promoting passenger and freight integration, lowering the panic level, developing dynamic rules based on region characteristics, and so on. The study's findings will help practitioners and politicians reformulate the existing transportation infrastructure in the event of disease outbreaks.Research limitations/implicationsThe demographic context of experts, is one of the study's limitations. Only experts from the Indian subcontinent were considered in this study. In addition, future study work can be based on a comparison of the outcomes from various Multi-Criteria Decision Making techniques.Originality/valueThe present research work differentiates itself through the analysis of mode choice factors considering the ongoing pandemic across the globe. The results emanated from the study can guide the concerned stakeholders to make better decisions.
