CYTOLOGY OF A GENETIC SEXING SYSTEM IN ANOPHELES ALBIMANUS

Abstract: Several translocation and translocation-inversion strains were induced in Anopheles albimanus Wiedemann by using X and gamma irradiation. The propoxur resistance allele (prr), located on chromosome arm 2R, was used to screen for T(Y;2R) translocations and In(2R) inversions. Six T(Y;2R) translocations and eight In(2R) inversions are described herein. The strains designated In(2R)[T(Y:2R)3]2 and In(2R)[T(Y;2R)6]4 eliminated 99.8% and 99.7%, respectvely, of the crossing over between the translocation breakpoint a… Show more

“…Without informed management, this loss of linkage of insecticide resistance with the Y chromosome would gradually result in an increase in recombinant resistant females and susceptible males. It was necessary to purge the recombinants and replace the stock at regular intervals despite the stabilizing inversion that had been incorporated into the strain [27]. …”

“…In such strains, genetic markers indicate the presence of the chromosomal aberrations through either altered linkage relationships or position effects of genes located close to chromosomal breakpoints. Genetic markers such as w and y also can be used in monitoring the production and maintenance of genetic sexing systems (Curtis et al, 1976;Kaiser et al, 1978;Shetty, 1987;Baker et al, 1981;Weller & Foster, 1993). More fundamentally, such genetic markers are necessary for expanding the linkage maps being established for An.…”
