Cytotoxicity evaluation of root repair materials in human-cultured periodontal ligament fibroblasts

Abstract: Aim:To evaluate the cytotoxicity of three root repair materials, mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), Endosequence Root Repair Material and Biodentine in human periodontal ligament fibroblasts.Materials and Methods:Periodontal ligament fibroblasts were cultured from healthy premolar extracted for orthodontic purpose. Cells in the third passage were used in the study. The cultured fibroblast cells were placed in contact with root repair materials: (a) Biodentine, (b) MTA, (c) Endosequence, (d) control. The effects… Show more

“…Even if at the first 24 hours all the materials showed increased cell viability, at 48 hours, there is a slight decrease in cell viability. MTA showed statistically significant increase in the cell viability when compared to Endosequence Root Repair Material and Biodentine [20]. We can conclude that MTA shows better biocompatibility and may be indicated for sealing of communication between periodontal and endodontic space.…”

“…[36] Our results show that MTA-derived materials could enhance the cell viability of 3T3 cells in vitro. Recent studies showed that the cytotoxic effects imposed by Ortho MTA, [26,27] Retro MTA, [37] BioAggregate, [18,28,29] Biodentine, [26,28,38,39] MTA Plus [40] and MTA Angelus exhibited negligible cytotoxicity. [41,42] While the extracts of BioAggregate promoted cell viability, Biodentine showed a reduced number of cells.…”
