Damage assessment on plate-like structures using a global-local optimization approach

Abstract: A new method for finite element model updating using simulated data is presented. A global-local optimization (GLO) approach was adopted to adjust the uncertain properties of the FE model by minimizing iteratively the differences between the measured dynamic modal parameters and the corresponding analytical predictions. In contrast with most of the existing updating techniques, which minimize modal force errors, objective functions based on Coordinate Modal Assurance Criterion (COMAC) and Frequency Response As… Show more

“…Changes in the measured data are then related to modifications in the physical parameters via system identification algorithms based on linear algebra or optimization theory. Recent advances in SHM tend to couple data-driven techniques with model driven data [17][18][19][20][21][22]. Especially in composites damage detection area, the current trend is to track changes in damping [10,17] for delamination localization.…”

“…These updating methods are widely used in structural dynamics for modal vibration inspection [14,[18][19][20][21][22], but their use is limited in heat transfer optimization problems related to non-linear convection and radiation boundaries [23,24]. FE model updating can be used to optimize the complex parameter set of active thermographic setups by correlating the numerical results with NDT data [25].…”
