Kacang goat (Capra hircus) is one of Indonesian germ plasm and kept by smallholders for meat production. This research was carried out to obtain the growth curve of body weight from 1 to 24 months of age in Kacang goats managed by smallholders at Tambang District of Indonesia. Total of 100 goats (51 buck and 49 does) were used in this study to obtain Logistic and Gompertz growth curves. Research showed that the Logistic and Gompertz growth curve have similar of coefficient of determination value (R 2 = 0.98). However, the standard error (SE) value in Gompertz was lower than Logistic curves. The inflection weight (IW) was reached of 13.16 to 15.30 kg (Logistic) and 12.76 to 14.41 kg (Gompertz). The inflection age (IA) was reached of 12.95 to 15.57 months (Logistic) and 12.71 to14.41 months (Gompertz). The growth rate (GR) were reached of 1.06 to 1.23 kg/month (Logistic) and 1.02 to 1.10 kg/ month (Gompertz). It was concluded that Gompertz growth curve was the best predictor to predict body weight in Kacang goats.

Simple Summary: Understanding the animal growth is important for optimized management and feeding practices as well as genetic improvement of animals; however, little is known about the growth of mink raised in Canada. This study evaluated the performances of ten models to find the best models describing the growth curves in mink. The results showed that Logistic and Richards were the best model for males and females, respectively. Growth curves were different between males and females. These results suggested that Richards model can be used for modelling the mink growth and modelling might be performed separately for male and female individuals.Abstract: Modelling the growth curves of animals is important for optimizing the management and efficiency of animal production; however, little is known about the growth curves in American mink (Neovison vison). The study evaluated the performances of four three-parameter (Logistic, Gompertz, von Bertalanffy, and Brody), four four-parameter (Richards, Weibull, Bridges, and Janoscheck) and two polynomial models for describing the growth curves in mink. Body weights were collected from the third week of life to the week 31 in 738 black mink (373 males and 365 females). Models were fitted using the nls and nlsLM functions in stats and minpack.lm packages in R software, respectively. The Akaike's information criterion (AIC) and Bayesian information criterion (BIC) were used for model comparison. Based on these criteria, Logistic and Richards were the best models for males and females, respectively. Four-parameter models had better performance compared to the other models except for Logistic model. The estimated maximum weight and mature growth rate varied among the models and differed between males and females. The results indicated that males and females had different growth curves as males grew faster and reached to the maximum body weight later compared to females. Further studies on genetic parameters and selection response for growth curve parameters are required for development of selection programs based on the shape of growth curves in mink.

This study aimed to identify the variation of 5’UTR Myostatin (MSTN) gene and its association to body weight in Boer, Kacang, and Boerka goats. DNA samples were obtained from 149 heads of the goats from the Indonesian Goat Research Center, Sungei Putih, North Sumatera. Polymorphism identification was conducted by direct sequencing and PCR-RFLP with DraI as the restriction enzyme for indel g.1256/TTTTA. Analysis of variance for body weight was carried out using the General Linear Model (GLM). The 5’UTR MSTN gene|DraI was monomorphic in Kacang but polymorphic in Boer and Boerka. Genotype frequencies for Boer 0.40(AA), 0.43(AB), 0.17(BB); Kacang 1.00(AA); Boerka 0.53(AA), 0.37(AB), 0.10(BB). The allele frequencies for Boer 0.62(A), 0.38(B); Kacang 1.00(A); Boerka 0.72(A), 0.28(B), respectively. AB was the most frequent genotype among Boer, but AA was the most frequent in Kacang and Boerka. Indel g.1256/TTTTA has a significant effect (P<0.05) only on birth weight (BW) of Boer, but no significant effect on other bodyweight parameters both in Boer and Boerka.AA genotype has the highest BW (P<0.05) than AB, but it’s not significantly different from BB. Indel g.1256/TTTTA could be used as a genetic marker for the birth weight of Boer but not in Boerka goats.
