Delivery efficiency of an Elekta linac under gated operation

Abstract: In this study, we have characterized the efficiency of an Elekta linac in the delivery of gated radiotherapy. We have explored techniques to reduce the beam‐on delay and to improve the delivery efficiency, and have investigated the impact of frequent beam interruptions on the dosimetric accuracy of gated deliveries. A newly available gating interface was installed on an Elekta Synergy. Gating signals were generated using a surface mapping system in conjunction with a respiratory motion phantom. A series of gat… Show more

“…The average beam‐on delay was 0.29 and 0.22 s for 10%in–90%in and 25%in–75%in gating windows, respectively. These results are consistent with Cui et al 9. who reported a beam‐on delay of 0.22 s or less.…”

“…The gun filament current hold‐on delay was set to 6.5 s. This parameter represents the amount of time that the electron gun will remain at its operating current following a beam‐on interruption. Failure to adjust this parameter would lead to significantly longer beam‐on delay times, as described by Cui et al 9. The gun filament current off‐frequency delay, which is set to 0 s by default, was increased to 1.5 s. This parameter keeps the gun at its operating current for an extended time if the magnetron frequency is out of tolerance.…”

“…In gated beam delivery, the linear accelerator beam is typically triggered on and off at either full‐inspiration or end‐expiration. The user determines a gating window, and radiation is only delivered during a specified phase of the breathing cycle 10. One common approach to gated beam delivery is the use of a deep‐inspiration breath hold (DIBH) technique for left‐sided breast cancers with a goal of minimizing the dose to the heart and lung 9.…”

“…More recently, the gating characteristics (e.g., beam profile and beam delivery efficiency) have been evaluated for Elekta Precise and Synergy linacs 10, 19. In this study, we have focused on the beam startup characteristics for gated delivery of an Elekta linac and the overall accuracy of the delivery for a variety of gating scenarios.…”
