“…The maximum diameter for each colony was used for comparison to ensure standardization among colonies with different growth forms (per Suggett et al, 2012). Fits of exponential decay across the counts in each bin were performed for both 2012 and 2013 to assess the population size-classes (Santangelo et al, 2004). The log count in each bin was plotted against the middle size category, with fits only done on categories until the first zero bin was reached; thus, avoiding issues with non-defined logarithms.…”

“…The same dynamics of cyclic abundances of small and large colonies (young and old) have theoretically been forecast for Corallium rubrum by means of a mathematical model (Bramanti et al 2009) and have been explained as an effect of exploitation (Santangelo et al 2007, Linares et al 2010 or anthropogenic disturbance (McClanahan & Muthiga 1988, Hughes et al 2003, Blackwood et al 2010. In long-lived species, the extremely slow life cycle does not allow direct observation of the forecasted dynamics, and the use of simulations, based on demographic models, is the only way to understand the long-term patterns (Heppel et al 1996, Fujiwara & Caswell 2001, Santangelo et al 2004, Santangelo & Bramanti 2006, Arrigoni et al 2011). Dynamics of fast-growing species with annual life cycles make it possible to observe in real time the same processes driving the dynamics of slow-growing species.…”

“…Because of its long history of exploitation since the 17th century and the continuous collecting activities by scuba divers (TESCIONE, 1968;SANTANGELO et al, 1993b;SANTANGELO & ABBIATI, 2001) shallow water populations are rarely able to reach a commercial size and are currently dominated by young, small colonies (GARCIA- RODRIGUEZ & MASS , 1986;CATTANEO-VIETTI et al, 1993;SANTANGELO et al, 1993aSANTANGELO et al, , 2003, in contrast with the deeper ones, accessible only to professional coral fishers and situated along the African coasts, from Morocco to Tunisia, in Spain and in western Sardinia (CATTANEO-VIETTI et al, 1992), where the Alghero coast, thanks to this peculiarity, is also known as 'Riviera del corallo '(COLOMO, 2002).…”
