Dental implants in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta: a retrospective and prospective study with review of the literature

Abstract: Aim:  The aims of the present study were to retrospectively examine Norwegian patients with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and dental implants, and to prospectively study a group of patients with OI in need of such treatment. Our hypothesis was that implant treatment in these patients has approximately the same success rate as in healthy persons. Study group:  Seven patients with a diagnosis of OI and a total of 26 dental implants were invited to participate in the retrospective study. The prospective part of th… Show more

“…Our patient is now 4 years post-placement of his first implant procedure and has been functioning without any issues. The diagnosis of OI type I should not be a contraindication of implant therapy as our case, and others [ 18 – 25 ], have shown. This case differs from other cases in utilizing synthetic grafts to aid in stability and providing another case to illustrate the advancements in implant delivery for patients with bone abnormalities.…”

“…In determining the success rate of dental implants, there is a great deal of variability due in part to the varying degrees of bone quality and quantity in the OI subtypes, patient compliance to treatment plans and dental care, and a multitude of other factors typically involved in implant therapy. One retrospective and prospective study cites strong success rates in implant delivery for OI patients with a survival rate between 93 and 100% [ 25 ]. Our patient is now 4 years post-placement of his first implant procedure and has been functioning without any issues.…”

“…To date, only a few case reports have been published on implant-prosthetic restorations in patients with OI [ 10 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ]. A Norwegian study reported a 95.7% survival rate of implants in patients with OI 25–135 months after prosthetic loading [ 22 ].…”

Successful augmentative procedures using autologous retromolar bone, corticospongous grafts of the iliac crest and synthetic substitutes have also been reported [ 10 , 11 , 16 , 17 , 18 ].…”

“…Although initially installed only in healthy individuals, dental implants have been increasingly placed in medically compromised persons since evidence on the effect of systemic diseases on dental implant success is limited. A few case reports have previously described successful implant treatment in persons with OI, whereas no study on the survival rate of dental implants in a group of individuals with OI had been published until our study in 2011.…”
