Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans of the vulva: a case report

Abstract: Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a low-grade to intermediate-grade well-differentiated sarcoma of dermal origin. Local recurrence rates are high but distant metastases are rare. This report describes a case of vulvar DFSP requiring four resections for primary clearance. A 56-year-old woman referred after excision of a vulvar tumour and histology had DFSP extending to the resection margins. Two more extended excisions again yielded a specimen with positive margins. The last excision was performed with … Show more

“…DFSP is a well-differentiated fibro-cutaneous neoplasm of low to intermediate grade malignancy commonly involving the head & neck and upper and lower extremities. Involvement of the vulva is uncommon but when present constitutes 1.5-5% of all vulvar malignancies ( 5 ). The tumor was first described in 1890 by Taylor ( 3 ).…”

“…35 Relapses are common after excision, but metastatic potential is low. 35,36 Wide and deep excision with tumor-free margins is the optimal therapeutic approach, in order to avoid the risk of relapse. 37 Mohs microsurgery has been reported as an appropriate therapeutic option.…”
