Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) waste generates an environmental impact. To achieve the most suitable option for their degradation, it is necessary to implement chemical, physical and biological treatments, as well as combining procedures. Best treatment was prognosticated by Plackett-Burman Experimental Design (PB), evaluating five factors with two levels (0.25 mM or 1.0 gL-1 glucose, 1.0 or 2.0 mM CuSO4, 0.1 or 0.2 mM ABTS [2, 20-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)], pH 4.5 ± 0.2 or 7.0 ± 0.2 and 30 or 90 day incubation), which was reproduced for 150 days. Therefore, PB identified a sequential treatment (plasma followed by fungus) for partial LDPE biodeterioration. Sheets were pretreated with glow discharge plasma (O2, 3.0 x 10−2 mbar, 600 V, 6 min.), followed by Pleurotus ostreatus biodeterioration. Fungus growth, colonization percentage, and pigment generation followed. Laccase (Lac), manganese peroxidase (MnP) and lignin peroxidase (LiP) activities were appraised. Additionally, contact angle (CA), functional group presence and changes and carbonyl and vinyl indices (Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy) were evaluated. LDPE surface changes were assessed by Young’s modulus, yield strength, scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Plasma discharge increased hydrophilicity, decreasing CA by 76.57% and increasing surface roughness by 99.81%. P. ostreatus colonization was 88.72% in 150 days in comparison with untreated LDPE (45.55%). After this treatment carbonyl groups (C = O), C = C insaturations, high hydrophilicity CA (16 ± 4) °, and low surface roughness (7 ± 2) nm were observed. However, the highest Lac and LiP activities were detected after 30 days (Lac: 2.817 U Lac g-1 and LiP: 70.755 U LiP g-1). In addition, highest MnP activity was observed at day 120 (1.097 U MnP g-1) only for P. ostreatus treated LDPE. Plasma favored P. ostreatus adsorption, adherence, growth and colonization (88.72%), as well as partial LDPE biodeterioration, supported by increased hydrophilicity and presence of specific functional chemical groups. The approximate 27% changes in LDPE physical properties support its biodeterioration.

A nivel mundial, el uso indiscriminado de productos metálicos vertidos en agua utilizada en la agricultura ha generado una grave contaminación, por lo tanto, es importante establecer una metodología para su descontaminación a través de procesos biológicos, con hongos basidiomicetos ya que se ha demostrado que pueden degradar una serie de contaminantes orgánicos persistentes utilizando enzimas extracelulares, además de eliminar metales disueltos del agua mediante biosorción, actuando, como un intercambiador natural. Los objetivos de este trabajo fueron determinar entre tres metales (Pb, Cr y Cd) cuál fue removido más eficientemente de la solución acuosa por el micelio del hongo Pleurotus ostreatus, así como evaluar su tolerancia y describir los efectos causados por cada uno sobre su estructura celular. La adsorción de metales por el micelio en medio líquido se evaluó utilizando medio Kirk modificado, se cuantificaron las concentraciones retenidas durante 8 días en solución de 20 mg L-1 de cada elemento, los resultados indicaron que la adsorción de Pb (75%) fue la más eficiente, seguida de Cr (42%) y Cd (2.25%). En los resultados en medio de cultivo sólido (PDA) ninguna concentración de Pb y Cr inhibió el crecimiento del micelio, sin embargo, con Cd se inhibió a partir de 60 mg L-1; no obstante, los tres elementos causaron en el micelio alteraciones a nivel estructural. C/N ratio and MnSO4and CuSO4concentrations were optimized for decolorization and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of bleached Kraft pulp mill effluent byTrametes versicolorimmobilized in polyurethane foam. Statistical differences (P<0.0001) at high C/N ratios (169), 2 mM CuSO4, and 0.071 mM MnSO4were determined. Decolorization of 60.5%, COD removal of 55%, laccase (LAC) 60 U/L, and manganese peroxidase (MnP) 8.4 U/L were obtained. Maximum of decolorization (82%), COD removal (83%), LAC (443.5 U/L), and MnP (18 U/L) activities at C/N ratio of 405 (6.75 mM CuSO4and 0.22 mM MnSO4) was achieved in step 7 at 4 d. Positive correlation between the decolorization, COD removal, and enzymatic activity was found (P<0.0001).T. versicolorbioremediation capacity was evaluated in bubble column reactor during 8 d. Effluent was adjusted according to optimized parameters and treated at 25°C and air flow of 800 mL/min. Heterotrophic bacteria growth was not inhibited by fungus. After 4 d, 82% of COD reduction and 80% decolorization were recorded. Additionally, enzymatic activity of LAC (345 U/L) and MnP (78 U/L) was observed. The COD reduction and decolorization correlated positively (P<0.0001) with enzymatic activity. Chlorophenol removal was 98% of pentachlorophenol (PCP), 92% of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol (2,4,5-TCP), 90% of 3,4-dichlorophenol (3,4-DCP), and 99% of 4-chlorophenols (4CP).
