Descriptive epidemiology of gastrointestinal non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in a population-based registry

Abstract: SummaryThe incidence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), particularly at certain extranodal sites, has been demonstrated to be rising, at least in the USA, more than for any other malignancy. One of the major sites of extranodal NHL is the gastrointestinal tract, though little is known of its epidemiological characteristics. Over an 8-year period (1986 to 1993) 1069 primary gastrointestinal NHL cases were reported to the Leukaemia Research Fund Data Collection Survey which covers many parts of England and Wales. … Show more

“…However, most of these studies analyzed a small number of subjects and only five recruited more than 300 patients. 2,17,[23][24][25] The current study is the second largest series, which follows an earlier study by Freeman et al 2 Table 6 shows the primary site of gastrointestinal lymphoma in five studies, 2,17,[23][24][25] together with a larger population-based report by Gurney et al 37 The most common primary site was the stomach with a frequency ranging from 44% to 75%. In our series, the gastric group comprised 75% of all patients.…”

“…The stomach is the most common site of extranodal malignant lymphomas, constituting 30%-45% of all extranodal malignant lymphoma and 1%-7% of all gastric malignancies [1] . The most common gastric lymphomas are extranodal marginal zone lymphoma of mucosaassociated lymphoid tissue (MALT), characterized by an infiltration of the mucosa by centrocyte-like B-cells associated with lymphoepithelial lesions, and diffuse large B cell lymphomas (DLBCL) [2] .…”

“…[ Table 5] summarizes anatomic location of the initial disease in the GI tract reported in recent studies. [2,3,8,9,22,23] In the majority of the studies, stomach is the commonest site of involvement. With the introduction of the entity MALT lymphoma by Issacson, more and more gastric MALT lymphomas are diagnosed.…”
