Lectures are the most commonly used training method but may not be effective in communicating safety information among migrant workers because of language and cultural barriers. The comprehension of safety information is particularly urgent in highly hazardous sectors such as agriculture, which has a high migrant workforce rate. In this study, an ergonomic user-centred approach was adopted to develop and evaluate safety training material targeting migrants employed on Italian farms. Focus groups with both trainers and migrants were carried out to collect information on critical issues in traditional training material, the most and least comprehended topics and suggestions for training improvement. Based on the focus group analysis, the training material was developed considering several visual factors and more engaging interaction between trainers and migrant trainees. The usability of the developed material was then evaluated in a group of 20 migrant farmworkers through a questionnaire assessing the knowledge of safety information before (T0) and after (T1) the training (effectiveness), perceived effort in learning (efficiency) and user satisfaction after training. The results showed improved knowledge, low perceived effort and high satisfaction, pointing to the positive effects of active user involvement when designing targeted training materials.

Compelling research from the early 1990s indicated a strong correlation between the consumption of the B-vitamin folic acid and the prevention of a serious birth defect (neural tube defect) in infants. This article examines numerous challenges the author faced when attempting to produce a culturally relevant folic acid brochure for Hmong women of childbearing age in LaCrosse, Wisconsin, part of a broad folic acid education program. An immediate challenge arose from the traditional Hmong belief that birth defects can be either a curse or a gift, "preassigned" in a former life and therefore not preventable. Other challenges that were addressed included language, acculturation and nutrition, literacy, attitudes toward Western health care practices, and attitudes toward taking medications, including a daily multivitamin. In order for public health communicators to reach increasingly diverse ethnic and cultural identities with important health messages, it is essential that project planning start from the target group's cultural context. It is hoped that the lessons learned through this project can be applied to other communications efforts with other cultural groups.

<p>With increasing changes in our demographic populations and new immigrants settling in the US, there is an increasing need for visual communications that address the diversity of our populations. This paper draws from the results of the researcher’s several past research and teaching projects that worked with different cultural populations. These projects examined the theme of multicultural design with a particular focus on user experience for audiences from different cultural backgrounds. The nature of the projects included printed materials, web design, video production, and interactive design. The researcher examined users’ preferences for precise language presentation, options of visual layout, cultural related design elements such as images, colors, fonts, and interactive interface design. The goal of this paper is to increase design educators and students’ awareness in designing projects for culturally diverse audiences.<strong> </strong></p>
