Designing With Empathy

Abstract: By becoming more conscious of empathy, those who create healthcare environments can better connect holistically to the user to take an experiential approach to design. Explicitly developing a mind-set that raises empathy to the forefront of the design process offers a breakthrough in design thinking that bridges the gap between what might be defined as "good design" and patient-centered care.

“…School leaders are in a position to effect change within the systems they lead. The goal of experiencing a student day was to gather and analyze information leading to future innovative changes (Carmel-Gilfilen & Portillo, 2016;Daniel, 2015;Eslamifar, 2014;Kolko, 2010).…”

“…Studies in business and health care explored the potential of empathetic design in business organizations where customers were observed in their own environment as an approach to gathering and analyzing information and using what is learned to apply towards future actions (Carmel-Gilfilen & Portillo, 2016;Daniel, 2015;Eslamifar, 2014;Kolko, 2010;Leonard, & Rayport, 1997). Existing research demonstrated the value of being empathetic to individual experiences and the informational frame in the learning process.…”

“…Similar methods have been used in development approaches to address self-management of type 2 diabetes, pediatric asthma, and quality improvement health care facilities [ 20 - 22 ]. The methods employed by the PEC are highly interactive and leverage the expertise of research participants in ways that exceed standard expectations for study participation [ 23 - 26 ]. By combining qualitative research methods with novel methods from design research, the PEC is able to create truly innovative approaches for the engagement of patients and caregivers in research [ 27 - 29 ].…”
