Detection of Coccidian Parasites and their Clinical Manifestation, Treatment and Prophylaxis in HIV Infected Patients in Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital

Abstract: The objective was to know the prevalence of coccidian parasites, their clinical manifestation, treatment and prophylaxis in HIV infected patients in Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Nepal.A total of 300 stool samples from 128 (64.00%) HIV patient without previous history of treatment with antiretroviral therapy (ART), 72 (36.00%) under ART treatment and 100 HIV seronegative control samples were collected and examined by wet mount, Kinyoun modified Ziehl Neelsen staining, Sheather's sucrose flotation and… Show more

“…This may be due to the fact that opportunistic parasites are known to resolve spontaneously with immune restoration among HIV/AIDS patients on ART [9,10]. The association of these parasite for lower 200 cells/mm 3 CD4 count was in line with that of Varasani (97.8%), India (83%), in selected ART centers of Adama, Afar and Dire-Dawa (62.5%), in different part of Ethiopia (76.9%) and Hawassa (72%) [16,17,21,23,24]. …”

“…Moreover, study report on opportunistic parasitic infection among HIV seropositive patients and load of CD4 count in Nepal are very scarce and there is no representative baseline information in the country. 32 Hence, it is important to investigate further to determine the rate of infection with enteric opportunistic parasites to determine the rate of infection with enteric opportunistic parasite in HIV-AIDS patients in other regions of Nepal which will provide the level of endemicity of the country. Skilled manpower and laboratory support required to investigate the carrier, latent and clinical infection.…”

“…In this study the prevalence of intestinal parasites among HIV/AIDS clients was 24.2% with 95%CI (18.9, 28.4). It is somewhat with studies done in China (23.2% protozoa, 4.3% helminthes)(10), Brazil (27%) (11) and Cameron (27.8%) (5).But it is less than that of studies done in Addis Ababa Zewditu hospital (34.3%)(6), and Jimma (39.56%)(7). More or less, it is higher than study done in Nepal (12.3%) (12).…”

“…Intestinal parasitic infection has been a major source of morbidity in tropical countries especially among HIV patients (3,4). Almost 80% of AIDS patients die from AIDS-related infections including intestinal parasites rather than HIV infection itself (5).…”
