Detection of Helicobacter Pylori in Endoscopic Biopsies in Sudan

Abstract: We studied the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori in Sudanese subjects with gastroduodenal inflammation. H. pylori was looked for in biopsy specimens taken from the antrum by two methods: rapid urease test [Campylobacter-like organism (CLO) test] and culture using Skirrow's selective supplement. One hundred subjects were studied. H. pylori was found in 80% of patients with gastritis, 56% of patients with duodenal ulcer, 60% of patients with duodenitis and 16% of normal control subjects. It was neither detected … Show more

“…The prevalence in the remaining two studies, from Uganda and Sudan, was 25 and 39%, respectively. 18,19 Despite this, this review confirms the high prevalence of the organism in the gastric mucosa in most dyspeptic populations in Africa.…”

“…(59) However, molecular tests and PCR technology have been raised as a useful alternative means of bacterial identification, which may circumvent some of these difficulties (59,60) but has limited mainly by contamination and inadequate sensitivity issues. (61) (18,19,(62)(63)(64)(65) Tetracycline is one of the 30S-targeting antibiotics that inhibit translation elongation by sterically interfering with the binding of aminoacyl-tRNA to the A-site of the ribosome. (66) Therefore, mutations located in two domains (III and IV) in 16S rRNA: helix 34 and the loop next to helix 31 (67) can affect the conformation of the tetracycline-binding site, leading to high-level resistance.…”

“…These findings suggest that the lower population density and relative socio-economic isolation of the area are factors to consider in the low prevalence of H. pylori infection in this area of Uganda. Information regarding H. pylori infection in areas bordering Northern Uganda is scarce; a study in Sudan using the rapid urease test and culture to diagnose H. pylori infection found a prevalence of 16% in normal control subjects compared to 80% in patients with gastritis and 56% in patients with duodenal ulcer [34]. It would be of interest to study the epidemiology of H. pylori infection in the region as a whole as well as examining whether the low prevalence of H. pylori among the Langi is due to the “racial cohort” phenomenon as has been demonstrated for the Malays [33].…”
