Detection of KHV in Freshwater Mussels and Crustaceans from Ponds with KHV History in Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio)

Abstract: As from January 2010 The Israeli Journal of Aquaculture -Bamidgeh (IJA) will be published exclusively as an on-line Open Access (OA) quarterly accessible by all AquacultureHub (http://www.aquaculturehub.org) members and registered individuals and institutions. Please visit our website (http://siamb.org.il) for free registration form, further information and instructions. This transformation from a subscription printed version to an on-line OA journal, aims at supporting the concept that scientific peer-reviewed… Show more

“…For instance, in farms with CyHV‐3 history (Bergmann et al., 2006) viruses remain active and cause significant carp loses (Panicz et al., 2020). Moreover, other organisms co‐existing in pond culture, such as invertebrates, can accumulate virus particles and act as infection reservoirs (Kielpinski et al., 2010; Panicz et al., 2020). To envisage the combined effects of direct and indirect factors of climate change on carp farming in the future, the results from both quantification maps were ranked and merged into a suitability map.…”

“…This mode of transmission had not been defined for KHV until six years after its first detection in Poland. Research by Kiełpiński et al (7) confirmed that Unionidae mussels may play an active role in KHV infection of carp. Therefore, it is reasonable to monitor invertebrate fauna present in carp ponds for involvement in the transmission of KHV.…”

“…A few studies using metagenomics have begun to illustrate patterns of viral abundance and diversity in freshwater mussels. 69,165,172 Viruses detected via metagenomics may represent environmental contaminants, 106 belong to parasites of the mussels, 98 or represent endogenized viruses, 120 and this needs to be considered when evaluating metagenomic data. For these reasons, to describe novel viral diseases of freshwater mussels, a combined approach of virus discovery and traditional visualization of viral particles associated with host cell pathology along with ancillary and confirmatory diagnostic techniques and sound epidemiological study designs is ideal.…”
