Climate change will expose the food-producing sector to a range of challenges. Inland aquaculture farms are particularly vulnerable, due to the difficulty in changing their location, and therefore require specific tools to predict the influence of direct and indirect effects on production, environment and economic feasibility. The objective of our study was to apply a simple set of models to produce a set of growth, risk and suitability maps for stakeholders within the common carp sector in Poland, to assist decisionmaking under two different scenarios of climate change: a moderate situation (RCP 4.5) and an extreme situation (RCP 8.5). We used present (2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013)(2014)(2015)(2016)(2017)(2018)(2019) and future projections (2080-2099) for water surface temperature based on land surface temperature data from regionally downscaled climate models to draw maps to: (i) show optimal temperature conditions for carp growth, (ii) assess risk of disease outbreak caused by three important common carp pathogens: Cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (CyHV-3), carp oedema virus (CEV) and spring viremia of carp (SVCV) and (iii) predict potential suitability changes of carp farming in Poland. The study identified areas with the most and least favourable temperature conditions for carp growth, as well as those areas with the highest/lowest number of days with suitable temperatures for virus infection.These suitability maps showed the combined effect of direct and indirect effects of climate change projections under RCP 8.5 and RCP 4.5 scenarios. The approach applied herein will be of use worldwide for analysing the risks of temperature increase to landbased aquaculture, and the results presented are important for carp farmers in Poland and elsewhere, industry in general, and government stakeholders, to understand the direct and indirect effects of climate change on the triple bottom line of people, planet, and profit.

Introduction: Carp edema virus (CEV) is poorly understood in terms of its potential for horizontal and/or vertical transmission in aquatic environments. Because of the need to identify species that can latently transmit CEV, we undertook a study to determine the degree of infection of species other than common carp (Cyprinus carpio) in natural waters and farm facilities. The aim of the study was to identify vector species and determine the routes of virus transmission in northwestern Poland. Materials and methods: 449 fish of 15 species were sampled for the study. The fish were collected in 2017-2018 from Lake Dąbie, Szczecin Lagoon, and three fish farms. Molecular analyses, which detected a fragment of the CEV gene encoding the P4a viral core protein, consisted of isolation of viral DNA, qualitative assessment of the purity of isolates obtained , and amplification of CEV genetic material by PCR reaction. The PCR reaction products were verified by real-time PCR. Results: The study revealed the presence of species that could potentially be involved in virus transmission between natural waters and carp culture centers in northwestern Poland. These species included roach, bleak, crucian carp, and tench. The results obtained suggest the need for mandatory virological testing for CEV in fish intended for stocking, which should limit the uncontrolled transmission of the virus in natural waters and its introduction into carp farms during the flooding of breeding ponds.

Pathology and infectious agents of unionid mussels: A primer for pathologists in disease surveillance and investigation of mortality events

Freshwater mussels are one of the most imperiled groups of organisms in the world, and more than 30 species have gone extinct in the last century. While habitat alteration and destruction have contributed to the declines, the role of disease in mortality events is unclear. In an effort to involve veterinary pathologists in disease surveillance and the investigation of freshwater mussel mortality events, we provide information on the conservation status of unionids, sample collection and processing techniques, and unique and confounding anatomical and physiological differences. We review the published accounts of pathology and infectious agents described in freshwater mussels including neoplasms, viruses, bacteria, fungi, fungal-like agents, ciliated protists, Aspidogastrea, Digenea, Nematoda, Acari, Diptera, and Odonata. Of the identified infectious agents, a single viral disease, Hyriopsis cumingii plague disease, that occurs only in cultured mussels is known to cause high mortality. Parasites including ciliates, trematodes, nematodes, mites, and insects may decrease host fitness, but are not known to cause mortality. Many of the published reports identify infectious agents at the light or ultrastructural microscopy level with no lesion or molecular characterization. Although metagenomic analyses provide sequence information for infectious agents, studies often fail to link the agents to tissue changes at the light or ultrastructural level or confirm their role in disease. Pathologists can bridge this gap between identification of infectious agents and confirmation of disease, participate in disease surveillance to ensure successful propagation programs necessary to restore decimated populations, and investigate mussel mortality events to document pathology and identify causality.
