Determinants of overall quality of life in secondary progressive MS: A longitudinal study

Abstract: Twenty-nine patients with secondary progressive MS underwent monthly assessment with Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), MS Functional Composite (MSFC), MS Quality of Life-54, and cranial MRI over 6 months. Overall quality of life (OQOL) correlated highly with emotional well-being, the mental health composite, health distress, and the physical health composite. In contrast, there was no statistical evidence of consistent correlation between OQOL and EDSS, MSFC, or MR outcome measures.

“…First, they are used in instruments based on two-factor models in which high correlations are seen between PH and HS and between MH and QOL. Second, in a study of response shift in prostate cancer, the mental component subscore (MCS) of the SF-12 was used as a proxy for QOL [50], and O'Connor et al [51] in a study of patients with chronic progressive multiple sclerosis noted a high correlation (0.636; P Ͻ .001) between changes in QOL and MH over 6 months (unfortunately, they did not directly study the differential responsiveness of QOL and HS).…”

“…Few patient-based longitudinal studies on general health status in PwMS have been performed [1,21,22,24,25]. The MSIS-29 has been scarcely employed in longitudinal studies [21,22,25] and few studies have used the MSIS-29 to identify predictors of the perceived impact of MS [25,26].…”
