Determinants of Pro-Environmental Behaviors

Abstract: Research teams in five countries (France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, UK) developed in common a comparative study on individual attitudes and behaviors towards the environment, and on the importance of environmental issues in the media of these countries. The sample was composed of 742 subjects, teachers and engineers. Results presented here focus on a cross-countries comparison of the media analysis and the questionnaire data. Important differences are observed between the level of pro-environmental behaviors a… Show more

“…We focus on four individual-level predictors that have been identified in previous philanthropic and environmental research: environmental concern, environmental knowledge, pro-social behavior, and socio-demographic characteristics (e.g., Bekkers and Wiepking 2011;Lang 2011;Lévy-Leboyer et al 1996). Figure 1 presents these various elements in our model.…”

“…In recent years, a growing number of studies analyzed environmental concerns and attitudes comparatively, relying on existing large-scale social surveys-such as the World Values Survey or the European Social Survey-where questions pertaining to environmental attitudes are available (Hadler and Haller 2011;Hunter et al 2004;Lévy-Leboyer et al 1996;Milfont et al 2006;Oreg and Katz-Gerro 2006). Fewer studies, however, focused on actual environmental behaviors (Korfiatis et al 2004), and of these studies examining behavior, even fewer differentiate between types of behaviors.…”

“…Other variables presently discussed are social and ®nancial expectations of behaviour outcomes. However, the relations between attitudinal components and pro-environmental behaviours seem to be very complex and, as shown by L evy- Leboyer et al (1996), caution is imperative, especially when extrapolating the results from one culture to another. In their study on sub-samples from six European countries, variations in a wide range of proenvironmental behaviours could be explained by either risk perception, subjective knowledge or attitudes.…”
