Determination of radial pressure distribution on the wall of the press channel of a novel biomass single die pelletiser

Abstract: Pressure is an important process parameter that greatly influences the density of biomass pellets. The positive number of Poisson’s ratio of biomasses makes pelletising possible in ring die and flat die types of pelletisers, because as a consequence of the longitudinal direction of load, the material strains into the radial direction. The radial strain is obstructed by the channel wall and therefore radial pressure and wall friction occur, which supports (backs) the compression of the further sequentially load… Show more

“…A pellet mill is an important machine in the biomass energy and food industries [1]. The primary parts of the pellet mill operate continuously for a long time under high-temperature and high-humidity conditions [2]; hence, they are prone to rolling bearing faults, especially compound faults. However, the compound faults are difficult to be diagnosed [3,4].…”

“…The piston flow theory was applied to the pressure of the screw press, and it was discovered that the optimal die entry angle depends on the yield strength of the compacting material and the friction coefficient of the interface between the die and the compacting material [15]. When the briquetting machine is working, the radial load causes the radial strain of the straw, and the inner wall of the ring die hole will hinder the radial strain of the straw, so radial pressure and friction will be generated, so that the straw is continuously compressed in the ring die hole [16]. The periodic variation of the extrusion force was the main reason for the vibration of the briquetting machine, which shortens the life of the ring die and reduces its reliability and stability [17].…”

“…due to the fact that biomass densification is strongly influenced by a multitude of disruptive factors, whose study requires deepening, both from a theoretical and experimental point of view. For this reason, it is important to take into account these disruptive factors in conducting experiments and in interpreting data in a direct connection with the conditions for conducting experimental tests [10,11].…”
