This study aimed to establish that online news photographs were dependent on language, using visual literacy. Semiotic analysis was utilized to determine the semiotic features present on the fifteen selected online news photographs. Also, a phenomenological approach was employed to highlight the information gathered on how students' understanding of online news photographs affects their personal viewpoints regarding issues in society and how semiotic features of online news photographs aid on visual literacy of students. The participants of the study were the fourteen (14) Grade 12 high school students in Maco North District, Division of Davao de Oro. There were seven participants for the in-depth interview (IDI) and seven participants for focus group discussion (FGD). This study obtained significant information that helped derive the semiotic features of photos based on their signifier, signified, denotative meaning, connotative meaning, and myth. Moreover, the study aided the understanding of students' viewpoints on issues in our society such as personal concerns, public awareness, clarity of message, stewards of the importance of news, sociological imagination, and civic action. Finally, participants shared how semiotic features aid their visual literacy, such as offering visual metalanguage, expressing emotions, and conveying messages.

Women’s political representation in Uganda is a contentious issue. On the one hand, there are doubting public narratives of Women Members of Parliaments’ (WMP) performance. The doubts about WMPs’ performance inspired growing interest in their parliamentary performance. On the other hand, there are concerns about the gender gap in parliamentary representation. The underrepresentation of women in the political scene raises a puzzle about those who dare to compete. However, at the same time, there has been neglect of what drives women in the first place to parliamentary representation and their relationship to performance. This intriguing question calls for an objective analysis to unravel what influences women’s interest in parliamentary office. This paper answers two analytical questions: How do women Members of Parliament construe their interests in joining parliamentary politics? And whether WMPs’ motives influence their performance. These questions were answered by analysing conversations and interviews of five purposively selected WMPs representing five districts of Northern Uganda in the tenth Parliament between 2020 and 2021. Field data was triangulated with performance data from the same Parliament’s Hansard. Findings reveal that personal and social-cultural factors drive WMPs to Parliament. Motives are consequential to performance, although personal motives were more potent than social-cultural motives to performance. Personal, compared to social-cultural motives, are more susceptible to social-political factors in constituencies, institutions of Parliament, and the broad government, affecting motives’ fulfilment

The central aim of this study is to examine the role of political efficacy in mediating the connection between political awareness and social media political participation among youths in Region XI, Philippines. This study used a quantitative method, more especially, a non-experimental correlational approach. Data was collected online through Google Forms using modified questions, and respondents were chosen using stratified random sampling. Validity and reliability tests were per-formed on the measurement model, while descriptive statistics were utilized to depict the constructs in the study. The proposed mediation model was assessed using the standard algorithm-bootstrapping of SmartPLS 4.0 for mediation analysis. The findings revealed that the measurement model is valid and reliable based on the AVE, HTMT, Cronbach’s Alpha values. The results indicated that youth in Region XI demonstrated high levels of political awareness, and moderate levels of political efficacy and social media political participation. Furthermore, the mediation analysis suggests that political efficacy significantly mediates the relationship between political awareness and social media political participation. These results underscore the critical role of political efficacy as a key mechanism through which political awareness translates into active political engagement on social media among the youth. The study provides valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and researchers interested in enhancing political participation through increased political awareness and efficacy.
