The purpose of this study is to outline the major trends and challenges that will shape the future of waste management for the next few decades in major metropolitan cities like Kolkata. There are certain trends and facts that more or less create the 'bigger picture' in which the waste management industry will evolve. It is clear that new challenges are emerging, and the current situation must be seen in a different way because the disposal site is limited and also it has to be made cost effective. Amounts of waste generation are largely determined by two factors: first, the rate of population increasing in Kolkata metropolitan area and second, its per capita waste generation -which are controlled by the evolution of economic growth, life style and food habits. The present study explains the correlation analysis of among different factors of municipal solid waste and the objective is to assess the future municipal solid waste stream in Kolkata metropolitan area. The results show that for a decoupling to take place between economic growth and waste generation, the waste generation by firms and households in relation to their economic activities must decrease in the future

Abstract. Production volumes are increasing by growing economy and consumption processes. Industry and other economic activities generate municipal solid waste stream. With growth of the industry, economy and pace of consumption major key is to avoid municipal solid waste (MSW) generation. The majority of developing countries are seeking to alter the prevailing waste management practices and to adapt the concept of Zero Waste society. This study aims to provide guidance in Klaipėda district and gives an opportunity to become the first district in Lithuania, which provides an objective assessment of the public municipal waste management service area and identifies the real situation of the municipal waste management sector. This paper develops that the path towards Zero Waste society is essential for the approximation of the different waste treatment technologies. To achieve this objective is a difficult task because the solution requires a holistic approach to waste generation, collection, processing and disposal. The main conclusions of the study offers a major challenges faced by Klaipėda district of limited data quantifying and characterizing waste generation patterns also suggesting that "way to Zero Waste" society require renewed governmental leadership as well as founding of effective national regulatory framework to reduce waste generation or conserve resources.

ABSTRACT. Within the municipal boundaries, municipalities themselves are usually the largest real estate owners and managers. Such significant amount of real estate property could be expected to be professionally managed; however, the situation is different. According to the latest publications, only about 25% of major European cities are able to follow the quantity and value of their real estate portfolios. The Lithuanian Free Market Institute has recently introduced its first Index of Municipalities in Lithuania and states that none of the Lithuanian municipalities has developed its real estate management strategy. This paper reviews the scientific research on municipal real estate management and analyses the system of real estate management in Lithuanian municipalities. The authors of the paper collaborated with the Association of Local Authorities in Lithuania as well as the representatives of municipalities, and together they identified the main problems of real estate management. On the basis of real estate management research and practice within Lithuanian municipalities the authors of the paper present a brand new model which would help to manage municipal real estate effectively by taking into account the priorities of strategic economic and social development tendencies of the region.
