“…We conducted microsatellite genotyping using 23 loci previously employed in the study system (Bergeron, Réale, et al, 2011b; Chambers & Garant, 2010; Vandal et al, 2020). The detailed genotyping protocol, is described in Chambers and Garant (2010), Vandal et al (2020). The parentage assignment protocol is fully described in Bergeron, Réale, et al (2011b).…”

“…We extracted DNA from ear tissue and genotyped individuals at 11 polymorphic microsatellite loci for site 1 and 14 additional microsatellites for sites 2,3, and 4, using protocols developed for this species (see Chambers and Garant 2010; Vandal et al. 2020 for details). We first assigned maternity when we trapped juveniles at their emergence from the burrow.…”

“…We extracted DNA from ear tissues using the salting out method of Aljanabi and Martinez (1997) adapted to eastern chipmunks (Chambers and Garant 2010). Individuals were genotyped at 23 microsatellites on sites 2-4 and at 11 loci on site 1 (Anderson et al 2007, Vandal et al 2020). We trapped juveniles as they emerged from their maternal burrows (5-7 weeks after birth) and carried out maternal assignment using the CERVUS 3.0.3 software (Kalinowski et al 2007(Kalinowski et al , 2010, which allowed us to corroborate the maternal identity and to assign the paternity.…”
