Development and Initial Validation of a Parent Report Measure of the Behavioral Development of Infants at Risk for Autism Spectrum Disorders

Abstract: We developed and evaluated a new parent report instrument--Parent Observation of Early Markers Scale (POEMS)--to monitor the behavioral development of infants at risk for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) because they have older affected siblings. Parents of 108 at-risk infants (74 males, 34 females) completed the POEMS from child age 1-24 months. The POEMS had acceptable psychometric properties and promising predictive validity. Most concerning items were social and communication deficits, and intolerance to wai… Show more

“…Although sensory and motor behaviors are not core features of ASD, differences or abnormalities in sensory processing and motor skill development have commonly been found, as noted in the literature described earlier. Feldman et al (2012) emphasized the value of examining child behaviors in the natural context, leading them to develop the Parent Observation of Early Markers Scale (POEMS). POEMS includes a large range of possible early markers or signs of ASD that parents can observe within the context of their daily routines and interactions with their child.…”

“…They were interested in tracking the emergence of ASD features to facilitate earlier identification in these high-risk children. Papers in 2012 and 2015 described development, reliability, and validity of the measure [62, 91]. The 2012 paper had ROC reported.…”

“…Feldman and colleagues [62] recruited families with an older sibling diagnosed with autism and then followed up younger, infant siblings with parents filling out the POEMS multiple times, at least a month apart. They followed up 108 children.…”
