Development and validation of a nomogram to predict cancer-specific survival in patients with hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma treated with primary surgery

Abstract: Objective We aimed to develop a nomogram to predict cancer-specific survival (CSS) in patients with hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HSCC) treated with primary surgery to provide more accurate risk stratification for patients. Methods We retrospectively collected data of 1144 eligible patients with HSCC from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database between 2004 and 2015. Patients were randomly divided into training and validation groups (ratio 6:4) and we used univariate and multi… Show more

“…In our study, age and clinical stage were independent prognostic factors for OS by multivariate COX analysis. The result aligns with the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guide, where the clinical stage is considered for patients’ stratification and treatment decisions [ 31 ]. We combined peripheral blood parameters with clinic factors to predict OS and improve prediction accuracy compared with the clinical model alone.…”

“…As it is known that compared with the SEER stage, nomogram has the following advantages: (1) By combining various independent risk factors according to the patient's condition, it allows for a more intuitive assessment and individualization of the patient's prognosis (21). ( 2) It quantifies the possibility of OS and CSS in patients, permitting a more precise prognostic evaluation (22). Therefore, for the first time, the prognostic nomograms were developed for adult RS patients to obtain personalized and accurate prognostic predictions in this study.…”

“…Another SEER based study enrolled 1144 HPSCC patients treated with surgery between 2004 and 2015. No significant difference in cancer specific survival was observed between whites and blacks, or between white and other races [14]. Using the SEER database, another study recruited 3,172 HPSCC patients aged 60 and above years old diagnosed from 2004 to 2018.…”

“…Several recent studies have built statistical models to predict the prognosis of HPSCC [10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. Race is found to be one of the independent factors correlated with survival in patients with HPSCC in some studies [10][11][12][13], in which black patients were shown to have worse survival compared to whites or other races [10][11][12][13]17].…”
