Development of a Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage Material-Based Refrigeration System

Abstract: The present research focuses on application of thermal energy storage on a convectional refrigerator to enhance its performance. Salt hydrate was used as latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) material to convert the convectional refrigerator to a LHTES material-based refrigerator. The cabinet of the convectional refrigerator was loaded with 10 kg of water at a temperature of 28℃ and experiments were conducted on it to know the time taken for the evaporator temperature (TE) to reach -5℃, and determine the … Show more

“…The achievement and maintenance of a temperature of a product or space below that of its immediate surrounding, the intention being to cool the product or the space to the required temperature, is known as refrigeration. It involves the removal of heat from the product or the space, and the transfer of the heat to a region at a temperature higher than that of the product or the space [1][2][3]. Applications of refrigeration are found in many areas, which include food preservation, electronic cooling, chemical process engineering, medical science [4,5], cryogenics, air conditioning [6], etc.…”

“…One of these techniques is to employ metal foams, which are extensively used because metal foam enhances the heat transfer in the LHTESS due to lower thermal resistance [9], thus overcoming PCMs' poor conductivity and fully exploiting their high energy density. It should be underlined that the composite PCM, PCM with nano particles or foam or fins, is employed in several other engineering applications, over thermal energy storage, such as, for example, electronic cooling [10], solar energy systems [11,12] and refrigeration systems [13].…”
