The Kostomłoty-Mogiłki succession is situated in the Kostomłoty transitional zone between the shallow-water Kielce stromatoporoid-coral platform and the deeper Łysogóry basin. In the Kostomłoty-Mogiłki quarry, the upper part of the Szydłówek Beds and Kostomłoty Beds are exposed. The Middle-Upper Frasnian Kostomłoty Beds are composed of shales, micritic and nodular limestones with abundant intercalations of detrital limestones. The dark shales and the micritic and nodular limestones record background sedimentation. The interbedded laminated and detrital limestones reflect high-energy deposition (= event beds). These event beds comprise laminated calcisiltites, fine-grained calcarenites, coarse-grained grain-supported calcirudites fabrics, and matrix-supported calcirudites. The material of these event beds was supplied by both erosion of the carbonate-platform margin and cannibalistic erosion of penecontemporaneous detrital limestones building the slope of this platform. Storms and the tectonic activity were likely the main causes of erosion. Combined and gravity flows were the transporting mechanisms involved in the reworking and redeposition.

Viséan calciturbidites occur in two separate turbidite sequences at the northern margin of the Rhenish Mountains: (1) the Herdringen Sequence (Becke-Oese, Retringen and Herdringen formations), and (2) the Hellefeld Sequence (Hellefeld, Linnepe and Wennemen formations). Both sequences show temporal fluctuations in the carbonate content, which can be related to global eustatic fluctuations. Two peaks of carbonate sedimentation which occurred during lowstands in the Holkerian to early Asbian and in the Brigantian are interrupted by a late Asbian decline of carbonate deposition during a transgressive interval. Patterns of bed thickness and carbonate content in the Herdringen Sequence indicate a sediment source to the north; it shifted during the Late Viséan from the northeast to the northwest. Coeval sediments in the Hellefeld Sequence were derived from a source to the southeast. Detailed analyses of Asbian sections show the high potential for fine-scaled correlation.

ABSTRACT. The Rhenish Kulm Basin is a deeper-water foreland basin developing in front of the Variscan Orogen in Germany. Three major facies interfinger and might overwhelm the adjacent one in time. These are (1) internal siliciclastic flysch facies, (2) central starved basin facies, and (3) calciturbidite facies. Calciturbidites are derived from the Northwest European shallow-water carbonate platform or not preserved intrabasinal sources. Besides, a deep intrabasinal swell facies is characterized by condensed successions. Diagnostic rock types within each facies enable the recognition of systems tracts of third-order depositional sequences. The interpretation of faunal developments and bioevents support these attributions. Hence, for the first time a sequence stratigraphic subdivision of the Rhenish Kulm Basin into 13 sequences is achieved, ranging from the latest Devonian to the early Namurian. The lower nine sequences are correlated with the Dinantian sequences earlier established on the Belgium shallow-water platform. Two Brigantian sequences 10 and 11 are identified and, despite the prograding Variscan Orogen, the two lower Namurian (Pendleian, Arnsbergian) sequences 12 and 13. The results demonstrate the successful application of sequence stratigraphy in a deeper-water basin, show that sea-level changes overrule the general, more gradual tectonic development of the basin, and prove the Palaeotethyan, if not global isochroneity of Mississippian sequences.
