Diacetylene-siloxane-carborane thermosets and ceramic precursors

Abstract: Thermosets and ceramic chars were prepared and characterized from a diacetylene–siloxane–carborane polymer, DSCS, and a diacetylene–siloxane polymer, DS. The goal was to incorporate the known thermo‐oxidative stability found in the siloxane–carborane elastomers into high‐performance thermosets and ceramic chars. The DSCS thermoset had excellent thermo‐oxidative stability as determined by a low weight loss and tough residue after annealing for 100 h in air at 300 °C, but it had a low glass transition temperatur… Show more

“…[2][3][4] Inorganic-organic hybrid materials have been extensively studied due to their strong chemical bonds like Si-N, B-N and B-O. [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] The polymers can also be used in the fields of coatings, electron, rocketry, and construction. [14][15][16][17][18] Therefore, these kinds of hybrid materials have good application prospects and research significance.…”

“…These kinds of high‐performance polymers are prepared by introducing appropriate inorganic elements such as silicon, nitrogen, and boron to the main backbone or side chains . Inorganic‐organic hybrid materials have been extensively studied due to their strong chemical bonds like Si‐N, B‐N and B‐O . The polymers can also be used in the fields of coatings, electron, rocketry, and construction .…”

“…The resulting block copolymer exhibited thermoplastic elastomeric behavior and excellent thermal stability up to 400 C. In the 1990s, a novel series of carborane-siloxanediacetylene copolymers were prepared by the reaction of 1, 7-bis(chlorotetramethyldisiloxy)-m-carborane, 1, 4-dilithio-1, 3-butadiyne and chlorinated siloxanes, which were the first highly thermo-oxidative stable thermosets (9,10). After 100 h in air at 316 C, the siloxane-diacetylene thermosets were brittle whereas poly(carborane-siloxane-diacetylenes) thermosets were tough (11). As reported, these copolymers had potential as matrix materials for advanced composites, precursors to shaped ceramics, or as coatings (12).…”
