Dielectric studies on binary mixtures containing 4‐trans‐4′ ‐n‐hexyl‐cyclohexyl‐isothiocyanato‐benzene

Abstract: We have studied binary mixtures with a n induced smectic phase of 4-trans-4'-n-hexylcycohexyl isothiocyanatobenzene (BCHBT) with 4-n-ethyl-4'-pentylazoxybenzene (EPAB) by means of dielectric, microscopic and refractometric measurements. The effective values of components p i and pi1 of the dipole moment per one molecule of the mixture have been calculated from values of E L and F J I . As a result of our studies, we have established that the heteroconiplexes formed in the mixture are so weak that they do not c… Show more

“…The exposure times were 5 and 12 min for the substrate with the SD1 layer and the LPP ROP-108 layer, respectively. The cell was assembled using 10 μm thick Teflon spacers between glass substrates, and was filled with LC 6CHBT [29] by capillary action. The material LPP ROP-108 orients the LC parallel to, while SD1 induces orientation perpendicular to, the polarization direction of the UV illumination.…”

“…Therefore, parameters F and h were calculated for pure 6-CHBT using experimental optical and dielectric data. 32 With these assumptions, the dielectric properties of pure 1 [4] were modelled at 85 uC by varying the Kirkwood factor 33 g, which relates m 2 and m 2 eff , in such a way that the calculated e I was consistent with the experimental value of 3.45. In the analysis of dielectric data extrapolated from binary mixtures, the g factor and also the overall apparent order parameter 34 S app were varied systematically in such a way that the reverse calculations reproduced the extrapolated dielectric parameters e I and e H for 1 [4].…”

“…[196] The transition from a N phase to an induced smectic phase is also seen in the conductivity changes. [192] In the N phase of the system 2AB5-6CHBT the perpendicular component of conductivity (measured in the direction perpendicular to long molecular axis) is higher than parallel conductivity (measured in the direction parallel to long molecular axis) (δ ? /δ || > 1).…”

“…The stability constant K of the heterocomplexes has small values 29.9, 32.5, 28. Raszewski [116,192] measured dielectric permittivity and refractive indices for very similar 5CB-2AB5 and 6CHB-2AB5 mixtures. The compound 6CHBT is considered that antiparallel dipole correlation is small.…”
