Dietary anthocyanins as a complementary medicinal approach for management of inflammatory bowel disease

Abstract: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is thought to result from a chronic or relapsing activation of the immune system in the GI tract. A growing body of evidence confirms the health benefits of dietary anthocyanins as plant-derived natural agents. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of several natural products rich in anthocyanins used worldwide for the treatment of IBD. Anthocyanins possess both protective and therapeutic functions in the management of IBD by alleviating oxidative stress processes, c… Show more

“…Anthocyanins are an important subset of flavonoids and are ubiquitously distributed in many berries, such as strawberries, blueberries, cranberries, blackberries, and sunrouge buds. Anthocyanins play therapeutic and protective roles in the management of IBD by inducing anti-inflammatory cytokines, modulating TLR4, and improving the intestinal microbiota [211]. Another polyphenol, curcumin, a yellow agent derived from turmeric, has long been used in traditional medicines to treat inflammation and chronic diseases [212, 213].…”

“…Anthocyanins have been largely recognized by their potent antioxidant properties and ability to modulate crucial signalling pathways and gene regulation of several inflammatory enzymes and cytokines [5,913]. Therefore, beyond these modulatory roles, their antioxidant activity related to the capacity to scavenge reactive oxygen and nitrogen species or to activate cellular endogenous antioxidant systems [14,15], may be of major importance in countering the oxidative stress in IBD [16].…”

“…Traditional and folklore approaches for the management of diseases are among the main alternative sources of medicine. However, in spite of the growing level of tendency towards traditional medicine, evidence for safety and effectiveness of these alternative medicines is limited . Although conventional treatments of RA commonly alleviate the symptoms, high incidence of adverse reactions of these drugs has resulted in exploration of alternative methods, particularly traditional remedies, for symptomatic relief of RA.…”
