Dietary Glycemic Index: Health Implications

Abstract: Weight loss can be achieved by any means of energy restriction, but the challenge is to achieve sustainable weight loss and prevent weight "creep" without increasing the risk of chronic disease. The modest success of low fat diets has prompted research on alternative dietary strategies, including high protein diets and low glycemic index (GI) diets. Conventional high carbohydrate diets, even when based on wholegrain foods, increase postprandial glycemia and insulinemia and may compromise weight control via mec… Show more

“…Regarding the recommendations that both GI and GL should be low, (Salehi et al, 2012;Egan et al, 2011), dietary restriction of coconut water and custard apple intake is advised. However, with regard to cashew (Figure 4), although its GI and GL are low, the initial glycemic peak triggered can be harmful, especially for people who have high fasting glucose level, such as obese patients who have metabolic syndrome and diabetic patients (Brand-Miller et al, 2009a). Gibson et al (2011) also found variations in the glucose level peaks of foods belonging to the same food group.…”

“…In order to minimize this problem, the use of 25 g of carbohydrate glucose has been proposed (Brand-Miller et al, 2009a), but this practice is still under debate.…”

“…Protein and carbohydrate quality may also be relevant in assessing the role of macronutrient distribution for health, as suggested by the results of the present, and previous, studies. 12,15,27 The intake levels of carbohydrates and protein in the VIP cohort were by no means extreme, which may have prevented the detection of possible effects of stricter carbohydrate restriction. However, compared with other cohort studies, intakes of carbohydrates and protein in the VIP cohort, calculated as percent of total energy intake, were intermediate.…”
