Anthropocene and “Development”: Intertwined Trajectories Since the Beginning of The Great Acceleration

ABSTRACT Objectives: We aim to propose the thesis that the trajectories of the Anthropocene and the current mainstream understandings of development are intertwined from the beginning. It means that the Anthropocene and the “development” are coetaneous: the implementation of development policies for the so-considered underdeveloped regions started to happen at the same time of what is known as The Great Acceleration of production, consumption and environmental degradation in a global level. Method: In this conceptual paper, we adopt a decolonial critique as an analytical lens and argue that different geopolitical positions may be necessary for approaching the issue of the Anthropocene from epistemological reflections that can include the cultural and political context of the production and reproduction of local knowledge. Results: Our theoretical argumentation sheds light on the role of Global North and South relations in shaping the environmental crisis. Latin America (LA) exemplifies the modus operandi of the intertwinement of the practical effects of development policies and the environmental consequences underlying the Anthropocene, in which natural resources are over-explored to satisfy export-oriented trade, from the South toward the North. LA is not only a propitious context to show the validity of our thesis, but also the source of alternatives to such developmental model. Conclusion: The emphasis on development as a cause of the Anthropocene supports The Great Acceleration thesis. The proposition of the name Developmentocene comes from the thesis that development and Anthropocene are coetaneous, the intertwinement of both resulting in the very definition of the new epoch.

El Cambio Climático (cc) se ha convertido, en cierta forma, en la alarma y emergencia de proporciones multidimensionales que atañe a agencias globales, gobiernos, empresas y sociedades enteras con el propósito único de atemperar sus efectos devastadores y de un desenfrenado mundo-consumo en términos insostenibles. Bajo esas circunstancias, el estudio pretende reanalizar la importancia de la Educación Ambiental (ea) y del Desarrollo Sostenible (ds) en tiempos de desajustes climáticos y de emergencia planetaria. Por ello, acentuar y cristalizar estas alternancias en los sistemas educativos supone, desde un primer momento, denotar una ea que construya una conciencia ecológica en ciudadanas y ciudadanos de las distintas coordenadas del planeta. Como también, un ds que acoja los diferenciados problemas y vectores remarcados en la Agenda 2030, que simultáneamente, reconfiguren los estereotipos de consumo y de desarrollo económico en la búsqueda del balance entre la naturaleza y la especie humana, en especial, de volver a reconectar a este último, con el primero.

The planetary transformations of Capitalocene affect us in multiple and heterogeneous forms. In this context, activisms emerging as embodied, experiential and situated manifestations of affectation. This article is an exploration of the activisms and resistances against impacts that Capitalocene -specifically, the extractivism- has had in Chilean society, from the perspective and experience of our own trajectories as global south academics and activists, committed to the entanglements that emerge constantly in the face of the impacts. Our work refers to the affects and resistances that we as authors have had the chance to experience in spaces of training and companionship of activists who resist in territories affected by the mining, agro-export and energy industry; and those who studied the Diploma in Social Ecology and Political Ecology from the Group of Agroecology and the Environment at the University of Santiago, offered between 2013 and 2017. Based on these experiences, we argue that the "affective turn" offers an indispensable perspective about hegemony, resistances and political changes in the current crisis.
