Directed differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells into chondrogenic lineages for articular cartilage treatment

Abstract: In recent years, increases in the number of articular cartilage injuries caused by environmental factors or pathological conditions have led to a notable rise in the incidence of premature osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis, considered a disease of civilization, is the leading cause of disability. At present, standard methods for treating damaged articular cartilage, including autologous chondrocyte implantation or microfracture, are short-term solutions with important side effects. Emerging treatments include the… Show more

“…Pluripotent SCs are able to self-renew unrestrictedly. They can differentiate in vitro and in vivo in all cell types deriving from the three germ layers ( 1 , 2 ). This ability makes them useful in cell replacement therapy and the treatment of numerous diseases ( 3 ), including diabetes ( 4 ), neurodegenerative ( 5 ), retinal ( 6 ) and cardiac ( 7 ) diseases, as well as muscular dystrophy ( 8 ).…”

“…Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are reprogrammed somatic cells which resemble embryonic stem cells and can be differentiated into numerous types of cells [69]. Therefore, human iPSCs (hiPSCs) are considered to be a potential resource for restoring NP cells and disc homeostasis.…”

“…One of the potential solutions to that state is taking an advantage of the recent discoveries of tissue engineering [7,8]. The application of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) is studied very broadly since chondrocytes are originating from the mesoderm germ layer.…”
