Discourse democracy at work

Abstract: This article presents an empirically based argument for what I have labeled ‘discourse democracy at work’. The idea of discourse democracy at work is launched to supplement the various representative models of democracy we find in European working life. Starting with a brief elaboration of the concept of public sphere, the article presents a number of reasons why all parties in working life can benefit from applying some kind of internal public spheres within private enterprises. “…This is a "dialogue conference" environment used for the facilitation of collective decision-making through democratic dialogue. The conference provides a meeting ground where the participants involve as main actors and resources of knowledge (Pålshaugen, 2002). As much as it is mostly applied in work life, it is also used at regional and municipal level to facilitate economic development, mostly in Scandinavia.…”

“…Following Dewey and Lewin, and many others (e.g. Flood & Romm, 1996;Greenwood & Levin, 1998;Gustavsen, 1992;Gustavsen, Finne, & Oscarsson, 2001;Pålshaugen, 2002), we argue for AR as a powerful way to engage people in creating knowledge that is meaningful to them and altering their existing situation into a liberated state through action. In such processes, involved people reach an agreement on shared actions, which, then, reenter into the process as inputs to foster new action rather than to develop self-contained theories (Gustavsen et al, 2001).…”

“…In other texts (for example, Eikeland 1997Eikeland , 1998Eikeland , 2001Eikeland , 2006bEikeland , 2008aEikeland , 2008b, I have tried to explain in more detail why the backstages created through development organisations also must be seen as 'counter-public' spheres inside organisations, not merely as ordinary public spheres like the mostly rhetorical public spheres of modern democratic societies at large, as suggested by Paalshaugen (2002). Hence, the participative dialogues needed 'backstage' are not in any simple sense neither 'democratic' nor 'negotiative', without thereby being anti-democratic, of course.…”
