Dissociation of thixotropic clay gels

Abstract: Laponite dispersions in water, at moderate ionic strength and high pH, are thixotropic: depending on previous history, they can be fluids or gels. The mechanisms of the fluid-gel and gel-fluid transitions have been examined through ionic analysis of the aqueous phase, static light, and small-angle neutron scattering, rheological experiments, and centrifugation. The results indicate that the particles attract each other in edge-to-face configurations. These attractions cause the particles to gather in microdoma… Show more

“…As a consequence of this, no well-defined phases or phase transitions can be identified anymore. The observations made by Nicolai et al [29] are in agreement with a study of Martin et al [33]. Hence, the origins of the sol-gel transition have not yet been fully clarified despite of more than two decades of research.…”

“…The same identical protocol has been strictly followed for the preparation of each sample, fundamental condition to obtain reliable and reproducible results 23 . All our samples after a few minutes reach a constant value of pHC10, as measured in 42,43 . At this pH the rim charges are positive 44 .…”

“…The polymer adsorption onto RD clay is an issue of great relevance because polymers [4][5][6] are employed to inhibit the aggregation and gelation of suspensions due to the formation of steric barriers the efficiency of which depends both on the concentration and the molecular weight (Mw) of the macromolecule. Furthermore, the coated particles may assume peculiar characteristics generating novel materials like nanocomposites [7][8][9] of clay and polymers.…”
