Dissociative and Sexual Behaviors in Children and Adolescents With Sexual Abuse and Psychiatric Histories

Abstract: Dissociative and sexual behaviors were assessed in a sample of 350 children ages 7-18. Four groups were evaluated: a nonpsychiatric comparison sample, a psychiatric sample with no history of sexual abuse, a psychiatric sample with clear evidence of sexual abuse, and another group for whom sexual abuse was likely but not substantiated. All children completed the Trauma Symptom Checklist-Children (TSC-C), and varying numbers completed the Rorschach and MMPI. Parents completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBC), … Show more

“…The answers with m and unusual contents reported in other studies (Friedrich et al, 1997;Kaser-Boyd & Evans, 2008;Kendall-Tackett et al, 1993) can also reflect early sexualization, as mentioned by Finkelhor and Browne (1985), as the center of the traumatic dynamics of sexual abuse. As mentioned, the problems in the mental development of sexual abuse victims signal the difficulties to organize an apparatus with distinguished spaces, and which remit to the victims' traumatic experiences with primary objects, with their body, with the others.…”

“…The CDC has demonstrated good internal consistency and good test-retest reliability (Putnam et al, 1993). It has discriminated between children diagnosed with dissociative spectrum disorder and children receiving other psychiatric diagnoses (Friedrich, Gerber et al, 2001), and children who have been rated by clinicians as having dissociative symptoms (Friedrich, Jaworski, Huxsahl, & Bengtson, 1997). Elevated CDC scores have also been found among children who have experienced parental violence compared with children exposed to other stressful events.…”

“…In general, Cerney (1990) and Friedrich, Jaworski, Huxsahl and Bengtson (1997) reported a strong dissociative component in the Rorschach, as verified in the responses with morbid and sexual contents and in the increased index of uncommon responses. Further research support these findings, showing the presence of dissociative responses by sexual abuse victims in the Rorschach, which indicates these individuals' greater vulnerability to disorders involving the soma and the self.…”
