Distance to old parents

Abstract: In the present study, features of and trends in child-parent proximity in Sweden are analyzed using comprehensive register data. The results show that 85% of older parents have adult children within a radius of 50 km, of which 10% live 'just around the corner'; corresponding figures for adult children are 72% and 5%, respectively. “…Defining "far away" using a threshold of 50 km is common in migration studies in Sweden (Malmberg & Pettersson, 2007). Also, country-specific Kernel distributions for Sweden, Australia, Great Britain, and Germany reveal that migration rates level off between 40 and 60 km across these different countries, which corroborates the validity of a 50-km threshold for defining long-distance migration (Vidal, Perales, Lersch, & Brandén, 2017).…”

“…For bringing up children, it might be considered important to maintain everyday contact with members of the extended family who live close by (Malmberg & Pettersson, 2007;Mulder & Cooke, 2009). Strongly locally attached couples can be expected to be more often found in rural areas, as feelings of closeness with one's place of residence, emotional attachment to the landscape, and social commitments are more frequent in rural compared to urban areas (Andersen, 2009;Fischer & Malmberg, 2001;Hank, 2007).…”
