Mangrove ecosystems develop in coastal areas and possess intrinsic characteristics being considered in Brazil environmental preservation areas, however, anthropogenic impacts associated with property speculation and petroleum activities are altering the landscape of these ecosystems. This study aimed to perform organic and inorganic geochemical characterization (pH, organic matter content (MO), elemental analysis, determination of metals -Al, Na, K, Fe, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb) in mangrove sediments of the São Francisco Estuary, Sergipe. Mineralogical characteristics defined the sediments as high acidity (pH <4.9), consisting of little decomposed organic matter and low humification. Measurements of elemental analysis with C/N ratio > 10% and MO greater than 15% are related to the proximity of the sampling stations to urban and industrial centers, intrinsic characteristics of native vegetation and different contributions from biomass. The Cd, Cu and Ni metals in sediments showed some upper bounds when compared to the legislation Threshold Effect Level (TEL) e Probable Effect Level (PEL) of Canadian Sediment Quality Guidelines for the Protection of Aquatic Life and Conselho Nacional do Meio Ambiente (CONAMA), being linked to anthropogenic activity in the region and alerting for toxicological reasons.Keywords: Mangrove ecosystems; San Francisco Estuary; Sediments; Metals. ResumoEcossistemas de manguezais se desenvolvem em regiões litorâneas e possuem características intrínsecas, sendo no Brasil considerados áreas de preservação ambiental, porém, impactos antropogênicos associados a especulação imobiliária e atividades petrolíferas estão alterando o cenário desses ecossistemas. O presente trabalho objetivou realizar a caracterização geoquímica orgânica e inorgânica (pH em água, teor de matéria orgânica (MO), análise elementar, determinação de metais -Al, Na, K, Fe, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni e Pb) de sedimentos de manguezais do Estuário São Francisco, Sergipe. Características mineralógicas definiram os sedimentos como de acidez elevada (pH < 4,9), constituídos de matéria orgânica pouco decomposta e de baixa humificação. As medidas de análise elementar com razão C/N > 10 e % MO superiores a 15 % estão relacionados à proximidade das estações de coleta a centros urbanos e industriais, características intrínsecas da vegetação nativa e diferentes aportes de biomassa. Os metais Cd, Cu e Ni, em alguns sedimentos, se mostraram acima dos limites referenciados por Threshold Effect Level (TEL) e Probable Effect Level (PEL) do Canadian Sediment Quality Guidelines for the Protection of Aquatic Life e do Conselho Nacional do Meio Ambiente (CONAMA), estando associados à atividades antropogênica na região e alertando para fins toxicológicos.

Três testemunhos sedimentares foram coletados na Baía de Guanabara. Dois deles apresentaram perfis de concentração de 210 Pb que poderiam ser utilizados para fins de datação. Taxas de sedimentação de aproximadamente 1 cm ano -1 (cinco vezes superior aos valores de linha de base) foram observadas para os dois testemunhos, coerentes com os dados existentes na literatura relacionada à datação de sedimentos da Baía de Guanabara, empregando-se 210 Pb. A validação da datação foi realizada com base nos perfis de cobre, cromo e chumbo, no fluxo de 210 Pb e no registro histórico das principais intervenções físicas ocorridas no século passado, tais como aterro, a canalização de rios principais e a construção de vias rápidas. No final deste processo, apenas a datação de um único testemunho pôde ser adequadamente validada.Three sediment cores were taken from Guanabara Bay. Two of them yielded 210 Pb profiles that could be applied for dating purposes. Actual sedimentation rates of approximately 1 cm year -1 (five times higher than the baseline values) were observed for both sediment cores, which agree with the reviewed existing data in the literature related to Guanabara Bay sedimentation rates based on 210 Pb. Dating validation was carried out based on the chromium, copper and lead profiles, on the 210 Pb flux and on the historical record of the main physical interventions occurring in the last century, such as embankment, the channeling of main rivers and the construction of express roads. At the end of this process, only one sediment core dating could be adequately validated.

A B S T R A C TGuanabara Bay is a marine-estuarine environment of high ecological and socio-economic importance, subject to a variety of environmental impacts. Sediment is the eventual repository for most substances introduced into water bodies and may, therefore, provide an integrated measure of the environmental quality, which can be assessed by many different approaches. In this project, the quality of sediments from Guanabara Bay was evaluated by the ecotoxicological approach: whole-sediment toxicity tests, using Tiburonella viscana, and porewater, elutriate and sediment-water interface chronic toxicity tests, using embryos of Lytechinus variegatus, were applied. Sediments were collected at 14 sampling stations, distributed across the bay. Chronic tests showed significant toxicity in most of the sediment samples. Sediments from stations 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12 and 15 showed acute toxicity as well. The results of the different tests were well correlated, and their integration showed that the sediments analyzed were considered unsuitable for aquatic life, resulting in the environmental degradation of Guanabara Bay. In this context, the control of pollution sources and multi-purpose management are required to improve the environmental quality. R E S U M OA Baía de Guanabara é um ambiente marinho-estuarino de grande relevância ecológica e sócio-econômica, e sujeita a uma ampla gama de impactos ambientais. O sedimento é o principal destino para a maioria das substâncias introduzidas nos corpos d'água, podendo fornecer uma medida integrada da qualidade ambiental, a qual pode ser avaliada por várias abordagens. Neste projeto, a qualidade de sedimentos da Baía de Guanabara foi por uma abordagem ecotoxicológica, por meio de testes de toxicidade aguda de sedimento integral, utilizando Tiburonella viscana, e testes de toxicidade crônica de água intersticial, elutriato e interface sedimento-água, utilizando embriões de Lytechinus variegatus. Os sedimentos foram coletados em 14 estações de amostragem. Nos testes crônicos houve efeitos significativos na maioria das amostras, enquanto os sedimentos coletados nas estações 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12 e 15 apresentaram também toxicidade aguda. Houve grande concordância entre os resultados dos diferentes testes, e sua integração mostrou que os sedimentos analisados encontram-se inadequados à vida aquática, indicando degradação ambiental na baía da Guanabara. Nesse contexto, o controle das fontes poluidoras e o gerenciamento dos múltiplos usos da baía devem ser implementados, no sentido da melhora da qualidade ambiental.
