Distribution and fibrotic response following inhalation exposure to multi-walled carbon nanotubes

Abstract: BackgroundPrior studies have demonstrated a rapid and progressive acute phase response to bolus aspiration of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). In this study we sought to test the hypothesis that inhalation exposure to MWCNT produces a fibrotic response and that the response is chronically persistent. To address the hypothesis that inhaled MWCNTs cause persistent morphologic changes, male C57BL/6 J mice were exposed in a whole-body inhalation system to a MWCNT aerosol and the fibrotic response in the alv… Show more

“…Translocation to the blood circulation could provide a mechanism for a direct particle effect on the cardiovascular system as an explanation for epidemiological findings of cardiovascular effects associated with inhaled ambient ultra fine particles [24][25][26]. All these above studies were supported our results for translocation and extrapulmonary toxicity induced by the test CNMs.…”

“…In the works of foreign researchers it is found that macrophages, leukocytes, phagocytes do not recognize carbon nanotubes when they enter the lung tissue of animals, and that they do not perform the function of recycling alien particles. As a result, inflammation of the lung tissue takes place and development of malignant neoplasms [9][10][11].…”
