Divergent Selection for Body Weight and Yolk Precursor in Coturnix coturnix japonica

Abstract: From a randombred control population of Coturnix coturnix japonica, four strains were selected respectively for high and low 4-week body weight and high and low total plasma phosphorus (plasma yolk precursor). Based on seven generations of selection, die realized heritabilities plus or minus their standard errors for high and low body weight strains were .37 ± .05 and .44 ± .28, respectively. The total gain and gain per generation were greatest in the low weight strain, primarily due to greater selection diffe… Show more

“…Japanese quails have shown a marked response to selection for increased body weight (Marks, 1978 a;Nestor et al, 1982). Marks (1978 b) reported that selection for increased 4-week body weight in Japanese quail resulted in changes in the growth curve.…”

“…The heavy weight (HW) quail has been developed by selection for 4-week body weight (BW) from the random -E-mail: lee.2626@osu.edu bred control (RBC) quail for over 40 generations (Nestor et al, 1982 and2002). The body and pectoralis muscle weights of HW quail have been shown to be more than twice that of the RBC quail (Nestor et al, 2002), which is accompanied by a higher amount of total DNA mass and increased fiber sizes (Choi et al, 2013b).…”
