Interpersonal ideology is a system of premises about personhood, relationships, and communication around which people of a speech community formulate lines of action toward others and interpret and evaluate others' action. Interpersonal ideologies are enacted, interpreted, and evaluated in social interaction. Interpersonal ideology emphasizes a cultural perspective; culture, communication, and relating are seen as inherently united. As a construct, interpersonal ideology intersects the areas of interpersonal communication, ethnography of communication, and critical studies.
