ISO 9000 refers to a family of three standards related to quality management. It defines the concept of quality as the features and characteristics of a product, a process, or a service that bears on its ability to satisfy needs explicitly or implicitly expressed. Standards provide guidance and tools to ensure that products or services will meet users’ requirements. It means that quality must be consistently improved and that risks must be evaluated to be anticipated. The seven principles of the ISO 9000 are here examined through the lenses of a case study conducted within a Belgian newsroom, where an automated news system was developed to support the daily routines of financial journalists. As end-users, they have been actively involved within the design process, which can be considered as the first form of use.

The article provides a comparative analysis of the use of ISO standards in the hospitality industry among 46 European countries. The study confirms the hypothesis that the more actively ISO 9001 standards are distributed in European countries, the higher is the level of implementation in the hospitality industry and other ISO standards for management systems (ISO 14001, ISO 45001, etc.). The degree of ISO standards distribution can be a non-formal criterion of the degree of population’s involvement in the technological, technical, organizational culture of the European society. The degree of correlation relationship between the Rating of countries by the number of issued ISO 9001 certificates and the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI), Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) and Global Innovation Index (GII) rankings of countries is examined. The authors offer the clusterization of the European countries according to three criteria: the number of obtained ISO 9001 certificates; the time of accession to the EU (and the existence of the membership status of countries, candidate countries or potential candidates); the presence of common characteristics according to the technical, socioeconomic, sociological and technological level, as well as moral and ethical norms formed in these countries during the existence of two political and socioeconomic system.

Productivity is the main key factor for Latvia to increased prosperity, ensuring efficient use of resources. Due to limited availability of resources and the increasing competition in the global markets, it is important for Latvia to support its economic growth through increased productivity. Since 2010 the productivity of Latvia's economy has been at the level of 40-45% of the EU average (Eurostat Database, 2017). A further increase in labour costs is inevitable in the open labour market conditions, therefore, strengthening the competitiveness of Latvian is largely determined by the ability to reduce the productivity gap with the advanced economies. One of the main challenges for Latvia is the creation of new competitive advantages that are associated with investments in the latest technologies, innovation, research, human capital, efficient allocation of resources and redistribution that comes with the behavioural changes of economic subjects. Economic structural transformation process is largely dependent on the quality of the institutional framework, which provides goods and resources market efficiency, minimizing the redistribution process costs and risks, thereby strengthening the country's competitive benefits. The aim of the research is to assess the potential for productivity growth to improve competitiveness of Latvia to identify the main obstacles that limit the attraction of resources and redistribution of higher value-added products and prepare recommendations for policies on the micro, sectoral and macro level. Research has high practical value that is related to OECD recommendation to monitor productivity in Latvia.
