Dosimetric characteristics of Novalis shaped beam surgery unit

Abstract: The dosimetric characteristics of a new dedicated radiosurgical treatment unit are systematically measured in terms of its percent depth dose, beam profile, and relative scatter factor. High-resolution diode detector, mini-ion-chamber detector, and conventional Kodak XV films are used to measure dosimetric data for a range of field sizes from 6x6 mm to 100x100 mm. The effects of collimator size, micro-multileaf collimator shape, and detector type on the dosimetric data are investigated. Results indicate that, … Show more

“…Evaluations of many commercially available detectors have been published with correction factors for small‐field dosimetry 22. A practical measurement methodology for validating small‐field beam data using multiple detectors has also been reported 23. A newly published code of practice from the International Atomic Energy Agency24 is also a useful guideline.…”

“…The mechanical isocenter accuracy of the C‐arm linac has reached submillimeter levels 8 , 9 . The flattening filter was first redesigned to be more efficient and later completely removed in order to deliver higher dose rates 10 , 11 . The multileaf collimators' (MLC) leaf resolution is also improving, with 2.5 mm leaf widths at the isocenter, in order to improve the dose conformality to the target (12) .…”

“…The unit is equipped with a permanently mounted mMLC. ( 19 ) It has 26 leaf pairs moving along the Y‐jaw direction. The leaves have different widths, the thinnest ones in the center projecting to the isocenter at 3 mm.…”
