Dosimetric characteristics of the small diameter BrainLab™ cones used for stereotactic radiosurgery

Abstract: The purpose was to study the dosimetric characteristics of the small diameter (≤10.0 mm) BrainLAB cones used for stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) treatments in conjunction with a Varian Trilogy accelerator. Required accuracy and precision in dose delivery during SRS can be achieved only when the geometric and dosimetric characteristics of the small radiation fields is completely understood. Although a number of investigators have published the dosimetric characteristics of SRS cones, to our knowledge, there is … Show more

“…One useful tool in dealing with small field effect is Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. Many recent studies have applied Monte Carlo simulations to examine the output factors of small field sizes used for radiosurgery such as CyberKnife, 6 , 7 Gamma Knife, 8 , 9 and Brainlab (10) . In addition, numerous studies have used Monte Carlo simulation to examine the accuracy of diode detectors measurements for small field dosimetry 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 …”

“…Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), by definition, is the delivery of a large therapeutic dose of radiation to an accurately localized target 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 . This results in an ablative dose of radiation at the target with a steep dose gradient to minimize damage to tissues outside of the target 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 .…”

“…Since there is no single detector that obeys all the three equilibrium conditions simultaneously under small and reference field conditions, different detectors, such as diode for small fields and ion chamber for reference field, should be used. [8]…”
