Dragon’s Blood Sap: Storage Stability and Antioxidant Activity

Abstract: Currently, consumers are demanding additive-free, fresher, and more-natural products. Dragon’s Blood Sap (DBS), the deep red latex of the specie of tree Croton lechleri (Müll. Arg.), contains a high concentration of phenolic compounds of great interest for the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. These chemical compounds are highly susceptible to degradation. Therefore, DBS storage stability and its photo-oxidation was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and UV-Vis spectrophoto… Show more

“…Proanthocyanidin, as a final product of the flavonoid biosynthetic pathway, is known to effectively prevent and cure bacterial infections (Rauf et al, 2019). Also, these phenolic compounds can be easily degraded (Escobar et al, 2018). As shown in Figure 2, S. aureus exhibited remarkably increased cell growth at all concentrations of CDB after treatment for 12 h, which is consistent with previous reports.…”

“…Due to their health benefits, the scientific community and the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries, among others, have paid special attention to the isolation of phenolic compounds from different raw materials, especially from inexpensive or residual sources such as medicinal plants, fruits, vegetables, industrial by-products, and beverages [ 9 ]. In this sense, dragon’s blood sap (DBS) obtained from the bark of Croton lechleri (Müll, Arg.)…”
