A Lagrangian approach is used to identify the seasonal climatological moisture sources of the seven climate subregions of Vietnam during 1980–2017. Using the outputs from the FLEXPART model, three main oceanic moisture sources, located in the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and China Seas, and three terrestrial moisture sources, located in the Indian Peninsula, East Asia, and South Asia, are identified. The most important moisture source during the rainy season (May–October) is the Bay of Bengal, followed by the East Asia continental source for the North‐East and North Plain subregions, while for the remaining sub‐regions Arabian Sea is the main source. For the dry season (November–April), the China Sea supplies more than the half of the total moisture over almost all subregions, while the continental South Asia source is the primary one for the North‐West subregion. The moisture contributions from oceanic moisture sources are the major contributions to the Vietnam subregions, except for the North‐West subregion where the terrestrial sources form the major percentage. Severe and extremely dry conditions are identified for both the rainy and dry seasons in all subregions using the 6‐month Standardised Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI6), and a positive significant linear relationship is found between the SPEI6 time series and the anomalies of moisture contribution from the sources. Thus, for both seasons, a reduction in moisture supply from the most important sources is found during severe and extreme droughts. The dependence on ENSO phase is also assessed. Finally, although the correlations are not statistically significant, we found that the rainy (dry) season in the northern subregions show a tendency towards wetting (drying), while the opposite was found for the southern subregions. This behaviour is consistent with the trends observed in precipitation, potential evapotranspiration, and moisture contribution values from the different sources.

Rapid urbanization and intensive agricultural practices in Vietnam's Central Highlands have substantially transformed land use/land cover (LULC) patterns, with implications for groundwater resources necessitating measurement. The objective of this investigation is to examine the links between multi-temporal variations in LULC and changes in underground water flow in Al Ba Commune, Gia Lai Province. Supervised object-based classification of Landsat and Sentinel imagery from the past 25 years has produced consistent LULC maps as inputs for the model. Geospatial data of LULC, meteorological data, and in-situ data of groundwater flow (Q) were used to calibrate and validate the integrated hydrological MIKE SHE model and simulate past Q conditions for correlation analysis. With these data on LULC and groundwater flow, this study investigates the relationship between LULC changes and Q using Multivariate Linear Regression (MLR) and Ridge Regression models. The MLR model showed high R² (0.91) but positive impacts of all LULC classes on Q, contrary to expectations. Further analysis with Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) revealed multicollinearity among LULC variables, which was addressed using Ridge Regression with a bias factor to correct for this issue. The revised model demonstrated that non-vegetative covers negatively affect Q while vegetative covers have a positive impact. These results highlight the complex dynamics of LULC changes on groundwater resources, which can be detected by statistical approaches. The results of study could be important for sustainable land management.

High-resolution reliable rainfall datasets are vital for agricultural, hydrological, and weather-related applications. The accuracy of satellite estimates has a significant effect on simulation models in particular crop simulation models, which are highly sensitive to rainfall amounts, distribution, and intensity. In this study, we evaluated five widely used operational satellite rainfall estimates: CHIRP, CHIRPS, CPC, CMORPH, and GSMaP. These products are evaluated by comparing with the latest improved Vietnam-gridded rainfall data to determine their suitability for use in impact assessment models. CHIRP/S products are significantly better than CMORPH, CPC, and GsMAP with higher skill, low bias, showing a high correlation coefficient with observed data, and low mean absolute error and root mean square error. The rainfall detection ability of these products shows that CHIRP outperforms the other products with a high probability of detection (POD) scores. The performance of the different rainfall datasets in simulating maize yields across Vietnam shows that VnGP and CHIRP/S were capable of producing good estimates of average maize yields with RMSE ranging from 536 kg/ha (VnGP), 715 kg/ha (CHIRPS), 737 kg/ha (CHIRP), 759 kg/ha (GsMAP), 878 kg/ha (CMORPH) to 949 kg/ha (CPC). We illustrated that there is a potential for use of satellite rainfall estimates to overcome the issues of data scarcity in regions with sparse rain gauges.
