Dual Surgical Navigation Using Augmented and Virtual Environment Techniques

Abstract: To obtain additional depth and visual information in endoscopic surgery, a dual surgical navigation system using virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) techniques complementarily was developed. A VR environment was constructed in the default 3-D view of the navigation software and an AR environment was developed as a plug-in module. The spatial relationships among the target organ, endoscope, and surgical tools were visualized, and the visual information superimposing invisible organs on the endoscopi… Show more

“…Accuracy of the registration between virtual content and the real scene is reported to be in the order of millimetres or less in recent VR/ AR applications to surgery. 30,[32][33][34][35] The required accuracy for most advanced radiotherapy techniques is of the same order of magnitude. 31 A reduction of the registration error from 5-10 mm to 1-2 mm has been achieved from 2002 29 to the present date.…”

“…Kim et al 33 developed a dual surgical navigation system for endoscopic surgery that used VR and AR techniques together to obtain additional depth and visual information for organs. The VR environment was developed to visualise the spatial relationships among the target organs, endoscope and surgical tools.…”

“…This offers the advantages of VR in terms of the free movement of the viewpoint. Before developing seamless switching, some of the authors proposed a dual‐display system . Two separate view windows were used for this dual‐display system to project AR and VR.…”
