Road traffic noise is one of the most relevant sources in the environmental noise pollution of the urban areas where dynamics of the traffic flow are much more complicated than uninterrupted traffic flows. It is evident that different traffic conditions would play the role in the urban traffic flow considering the dynamic nature of the traffic flow on one hand and presence of traffic lights, roundabouts, etc. on the other hand. The main aim of the current paper is to investigate the effect of different traffic conditions on urban road traffic noise. To do so, different traffic conditions have been theoretically generated by the Monte Carlo Simulation technique following the distribution of traffic speed in the urban roads. The “ASJ RTN-Model” has been considered as a base road traffic noise prediction model which would deal with different traffic conditions including steady and nonsteady traffic flow that would cover the urban traffic flow conditions properly. Having generated the vehicles speeds in different traffic conditions, the emitted noise (LWA) and subsequently the noise level at receiver (LA) were estimated by “ASJ RTN-Model.” Having estimated LWA and LA for each and every vehicle in each traffic condition and taking the concept of transient noise into account, the single event sound exposure levels (SEL) in different traffic conditions are calculated and compared to each other. The results showed that decelerated traffic flow had the lowest contribution, compared to congestion, accelerated flow, free flow, oversaturated congestion, and undersaturated flow by 16%, 14%, 12%, 12%, and 10%, respectively. Moreover, the distribution of emitted noise and noise level at receiver were compared in different traffic conditions. The results showed that traffic congestion had considerably the maximum peak compared to other traffic conditions which would highlight the importance of the range of generated noise in different traffic conditions.

Road traffic in crossroads increases noise levels in Tirana. This study demonstrates the inhabitants' perceptions on noise using questionnaires and noise level predictions at building façades using three different speed roads and four ranges of building heights, and applying the Nordic Prediction Method for five crossroad urban areas of Tirana. Nordic Prediction Method was applied to calculate: (1) basic noise for high and low speed roads, (2) noise levels for outside receivers at building façade in crossroad neighbourhoods. A quarter of respondents (out of 36) perceived to get sick due to high noise levels, and at least one respondent in every crossroads perceived their crossroad environments associated with high noise levels. Outside receivers (imaginary receivers or inhabitants) at building façades located at crossroads and close to high speed roads were exposed to high noise levels exceeding the national and the WHO community noise standards of 55 dBA for daytime. Speeds of vehicles and locations of buildings in crossroad neighbourhoods contributed to noise levels at building façades. This study identified high noise level areas that can be further investigated in terms of long-term effects of high noise levels on population health in Tirana.

Evaluation of Building Construction-Induced Noise and Vibration Impact on Residents

Environmental noise and vibration induced by building construction are increasingly prominent in daily life. If the noise and vibration level exceeds the corresponding standard limits stipulated by the country, humans' normal life, working, or studying efficiency would be interfered. This paper aims to explore how residents respond to noise and vibration mainly induced by the building construction. The noise and vibration measurements, as well as a questionnaire survey, were conducted. Through analysis and comparisons, it is shown that the noise impacts were concentrated in the area near the construction site. For the noise and vibration transmission within the building, the noise levels were amplified in the lower floors and gradually attenuated with floors, and the vibration levels decayed with the floors. The noise impact was much greater than the vibration impact. Building construction was found to be one of the most annoying noise and vibration sources, while the subway operation has little impact on residents according to either subjective or objective evaluation. The ratio of noise and vibration dissatisfaction was less than that of annoyance, which demonstrated that the residents' psychological capacity was high toward the impact of noise and vibration. The proposed dose-response relationship can apply in a similar community environment.
