Early Middle Devonian trilobites and events in the Nismes – Vireux-Molhain area, southern border of the Dinant Synclinorium (Belgium, northern France)

Abstract: Well-preserved trilobite specimens are recorded from Eifelian strata between the villages of Nismes (southern Belgium) and Vireux-Molhain (northern France). In the area of study the lower Eifelian Vieux Moulin Member of the Jemelle Formation crops out. The diversified trilobite associations of this unit occur in dark shales and siltstones during a deepening phase and replace the comparatively poorly diversified trilobite fauna of the underlying Eau Noire Formation. This overturn of the local trilobite fauna mi… Show more

“…In total, the asteropyginids, in spite of their distinctive morphologies, seem to represent a clade that is drifting through glabellar morphospace, showing no concerted patterns, other than a steady increase in glabellar disparity as diversity increased, followed by a steady decline and then the blinking out of glabellar disparity as the diversity of the subfamily and family declined, with the entire order it belongs to eventually disappearing at the end of the Devonian (Feist 1991; Bignon and Crônier 2013; Crônier 2013; Van Viersen 2013; Bignon et al 2014; Van Viersen and Bignon 2018; Van Viersen and Vanherle 2018; Bault et al 2022a). A key question in any clade's history is the extent to which the changing patterns of disparity through time are related to patterns of speciation as opposed to extinction (Guillerme et al 2020).…”

“…Carbonate intercalations are rare and fossils are often dissolved and exposed as moults. The famous 'Mur des Douaniers' trilobite locality in Vireux (France) exposes these facies (Dumoulin & Blockmans, 2008;Van Viersen et al, 2019). The upper half of the member is dominantly silty with some carbonate levels (coquina beds, possibly corresponding to tempestites) that yields a more diverse fauna (trilobites, brachiopods, orthocerids, gastropods, Cystiphylloides).…”

“…Recently Van Viersen et al (2019) introduced the 'Vieux Moulin event' to describe a horizon rich in well-preserved trilobites. However, this event has no impact neither on fauna nor on deposition and has only a very local extension.…”
