Economic burden of periodontitis in the United States and Europe: An updated estimation

Abstract: Background:The aim of this study is to estimate the direct and indirect economic burdens of periodontal disease in the US and in Europe. Methods: We used the most recent data available for the US and for Europe (32 European countries) to estimate the cost of periodontal disease. Global health, dental and periodontal expenditures were estimated. We tried to estimate the direct and the indirect costs of periodontitis. Indirect costs, those related to productivity losses, are a consequence of periodontal disease … Show more

“…The global prevalence of severe periodontitis has been estimated at 11.2%, and the disease is ranked the sixth most prevalent disease worldwide (Tonetti et al 2017). The economic burden of periodontitis in the United States and Europe has been estimated as US$342 billion (Botelho et al 2021). Over the past 15 y, evidence has accumulated that periodontitis is linked with a range of systemic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, certain cancers, and dementia, suggesting that periodontal health is vital for good general health (Hajishengallis and Chavakis 2021).The identification of bacterial species that characterize a subgingival plaque dysbiotic signature started with the seminal cross-sectional study by Socransky et al (1998).…”

“…1 In 2018, the aggregate direct cost of periodontal diseases in the USA amounted to $3.49 billion, while the indirect costs caused by the disease were estimated to reach $154 billion. 2 These costs are likely to increase, as an aging population coupled with the longer retention of teeth will result in more patients affected by periodontal destruction.…”

“…In 2018, the economic cost of periodontal disease was $154.06 billion in the U.S. and €158.64 billion in Europe [ 3 ]. Therefore, prevention and management of periodontal diseases associated with a large economic burden are necessary.…”
